Man jumps from bridge after slashing attack
Manchester, NH -
Neighbors said a Sudanese woman ran through the housing project off South Elm Street afternoon, her estranged husband chasing and slashing her with a knife. The husband then drove off, stopped his vehicle on the Queen City Bridge, and plunged into the river.
Friends said the victim's name is Awok and she and her husband have three young boys, who were at daycare at the time of the stabbing. The family lived at 74 Baker St.
Robert Mashut, 19, said he had gone to his car in the parking lot behind his home at 81 Ahern St. to get his wallet when he saw the victim running towards him.
He said he thought of taking her to the hospital himself, but said she was bleeding too much. The victim then went to Mashut's home, where she remained with Mashut's mother, Angelina Clement, waiting for an ambulance to take her to the Elliot Hospital. Her condition is unknown.
Firefighters searched the fast-moving Merrimack River for the victim's husband without success. (DAVID LANE)
