IGAD ministerial council commends progress in CPA implementation, appreciates Abyie Roadmap

 

Addis Abab, June 13 (SUNA) - The Ministerial Council of the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), chaired by the Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thursday concluded its sessions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the participation of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deng Alor. The IGAD ministerial council then approved a bundle of recommendations put forward by Experts, focusing on promotion of integration among the member states, particularly in the economic aspects, and the evaluation mechanisms for the performance of the organization. In this connection, the Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Seyoum Mesfin, said in a statement to SUNA the meeting stressed the importance of means of enhancing integration among the member States. He also praised the progress in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan and voiced out his appreciation over endorsement of "Abyie Roadmap" by the two partners of the CPA. Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deng Alor, explained to SUNA the Ministerial council delayed discussions on borders dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea to the Summit meeting and commended the reconciliation between the Somali government and opposition and urged the two parties to implement the Djibouti agreement. The Council further called on Ethiopia and Kenya to appoint envois to follow up the implementation of Djibouti agreement, said the Minister. Alor explained that IGAD ministerial council commended Sudan's pioneering role in the IGAD. It is to be noted that the ministerial council assigned Foreign Ministers of Sudan and Kenya to urge Eritrea to resume its active membership in the organization. Ethiopia assumes the current presidency of the IGAD while Kenya assumes the Secretariats of the organization. Khartoum will be the host capital for the coming meeting of the IGAD Ministerial Council, scheduled to be convened before the end of 2008. MF/MF
