So Paulo Two large holding companies from Sudan are interested in forming partnerships with Brazilian companies. The Dan Fodio group, comprised of 15 companies in different sectors, is seeking suppliers of agricultural equipment, especially for sugarcane planting and harvesting. The Kuwaiti Sudanese Holding Company, which has a share capital of US$ 102 million, wants to form partnerships to invest in the Arab country.

According to the secretary general at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Michel Alaby, who met yesterday (29th) with the chief executive at the Kuwaiti Sudanese Company, Amin Sid Ahmed Hassan, the group is very much interested in technology transfer, raw material and equipment from Brazil for the fields of ethanol, electric cables, oil exploration and processing of gum Arabic, which is the leading Sudanese product, used in the manufacturing of non-alcoholic beverages and sweets, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.

In the field of oil exploration, for example, the Chinese are operating in two areas, but there are still another 20 areas to be explored. According to Alaby, Brazilian companies interested in partnering with the group could invest a small share of capital. "The group has keen interest in Brazilian technology," said Alaby.

The group's main sectors of operation are financial, agricultural, real estate and petroleum. The Kuwaiti Sudanese Holding Company was established by large companies and businessmen from Kuwait in 2005, and a subsidiary was created in Sudan in 2007.

According to Alaby, Brazilian makers of agricultural machinery and equipment have great opportunities with the Dan Fodio Group as well. "The group is huge," he said. It has more than 3,000 employees working in sectors such as medical gases, metallurgy, engineering and construction of public works, such as bridges, highways and buildings, oil exploration, agriculture, automobiles and buses, and oil transport and storage.

Equipment and products that the group's agricultural arm, Aldanga, is seeking in Brazil include sugarcane planting and harvesting machines, ploughs, fertilisers, tractors, machines for hand planting, animal traction agricultural machinery and ethanol production technology. Interested companies should contact the general manager at Aldanga, Mohamed Ali Ahmed Kara, using the contacts at end of this article.

The holding company, which was founded in 1982, represents 12 foreign companies in Sudan. Represented countries include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, China, Turkey, England and Korea. With a capital of US$ 500 million, the group owns offices in London and China.

Also yesterday, Alaby visited the Kenana Sugar Company, the leading sugar producer in the country. The secretary general met with the general manager at the company, Mohamed El Mardi, who has already travelled to Brazil and sent several work teams to purchase equipment from sugar and alcohol refineries. Representatives of the group, which is negotiating with Dedini, a maker of industrial equipment whose flagship is technology for alcohol and sugar production, should return to Brazil in March.

In every meeting, Alaby was accompanied by the Sudanese ambassador to Brazil, Rahamtalla Osman. The two are in the Arab country on the occasion of the Brazilian participation in the Khartoum International Fair, which will continue until February 1st. Today, Alaby should visit the Ministry of Industry.

Fair

According to the market development analyst at the Arab Brazilian Chamber, Jean Gonalves da Silva, who is at the organisation's stand at the fair, sandals and flip-flops by Brazilian company Grendene are enjoying success among the Sudanese. The company sent samples of 25 different models to be showcased. Based in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, the company exports to more than 80 countries, including Arab ones such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Algeria.
