Government urges US Administration to take clear stance towards allegations of the ICC

Khartoum, July 20 (SUNA) - The Government urged the American administration to take a clear stance toward the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its allegations against the leadership of Sudan. State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ali Karti said in a statement to the press following his meeting with the American Charge d'Affaires to Khartoum, Alberto Fernandez, Sunday that he conveyed to the American Charge d'Affaires the stance of the Sudanese government and urged a clear stance from the US administration toward the ICC in a view that USA is not a signatory of its statute and considering its interest in the commitment to the peace agreements. The minister explained that it is very contradictory to call for peace in Darfur and to commitment to the implementation of the agreements and at the same time the President of the Republic who is the guarantor of all this is targeted. Karti referred to the various roles being played by various bodies within the US administration in a view that some adopt the ICC file even before its announcement as other bodies assume a contrary stance. The Minister explained that the official stance they heard today is that USA attaches top priority to the situations on the ground and the importance of implementing the peace agreements. In this connection, Karti explained that this entails no launching of such accusations to the Sudanese government. The US Charge d'Affaires, on his part, said his talks with the State Minister were constructive and positive. He explained that they want to focus on the future and to make a tangible progress on the ground in Darfur through dialogue with Sudan, UN and the international community. MF/ BT
