Government, AU hold talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Khartoum, Aug. 4 (SUNA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deng Alor, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, Monday co-chaired joint talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which focused on issues of UN-AU peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) as well as means of pushing forward the peace process and the allegations of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). In this connection, the official Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ali Al-Saddiq, said in a statement to the press the Government and the AU delegation discussed means of making a success the peacekeeping mission in Darfur, saying that the two sides underlined the success of this mission in a view that its success is a success of the whole continent of Africa. The Ambassador explained that the two sides further discussed activation of the political track and stressed the importance of the efforts by the Joint Chief Mediator and pledged to extend whatever necessary assistance to him in order to make his mission a success. Ambassador Al-Saddiq added that the Government and the AU discussed the allegations of the ICC against Sudan, stressing necessity of exchange of information and ideas regarding this issue and agreed that it is very dangerous to target a president by the ICC while he is practicing his duties in ruling his country. In this connection, the two sides agreed that ICC targets the African continent. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deng Alor commended the efforts by the African Union in support to the Sudan as well as in issuance of the UN Security Council Resolution No (2868). The Minister further briefed the AU Chairperson about the outcomes of his recent visit to France. He also touched on the work of the High Committee set by the Government to deal with the allegations of the ICC, saying that the issue of Darfur is a Sudanese issue and that the government is exerting continuous efforts to solve it, renewing this commitment. Alor further asserted the right of the people of Sudan to defend their president and the symbol of their sovereignty as well as to maintain the territorial integrity of their country, enumerating the internal initiatives and efforts to unify the national ranks as well as the open political dialogue towards the end of the current crises of Sudan. Ambassador Ali Al-Saddiq said the visit of Dr. Jean Ping is the first after the extension of the mandate of the UNAMID by the Security Council and after the strong African Union support to Sudan following the ICC allegations. The visit of the AU delegation comes to reflect the unity of African position as well as the close cooperation between the Government and the AU in the face of the challenges facing the Sudan, said the Ambassador. Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, said his visit comes to have a closer and holistic vision about the situation in Sudan through his meeting with the Sudanese officials. He explained that his constructive and fruitful talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs focused on all the issues pertinent to the latest developments in Sudan, particularly the UNAMID and the efforts of the Joint Chief Mediator in the political track and the current situation following the ICC allegations against Sudan.
