Enyimba leapt to the top of Group B of the CAF Champions League on Sunday after defeating TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-0 in Aba.
Second-half goals by the prolific pair of Eze Otorogu and Stephen Worgu gave the former African champion the much-needed victory.
The win took Enyimba’s points total to six from three games following another victory over Cameroun‘s Coton Sport in Aba a fortnight ago.
Al-Hilal, which defeated Enyimba 3-2 in Obdurman in July, is now second in the table with five points after playing back-to-back draws after that victory. Coton Sport is third with four points, while Mazembe has one.
The Nigerian side needed the three points to move ahead of Sudan’s Al-Hilal in the table as the group stages reached halfway, but found the going tough on the sodden pitch, with the Congolese defending well and hoping to catch their hosts on the counter-attack.
The former Globacom Premier League champion was presented with a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead in the first half when it won a penalty, but the kick was missed.
Otorogu, who scored in the 2-0 win over Coton Sport a fortnight ago, got Enyimba’s first goal when he beat Mazembe’s offside trap and coolly beat the keeper.
Worgu, the leading scorer in the competition with 12goals, made the points safe with less than 10 minutes to go with a neat left-foot finish after creating space for himself in the Mazembe box.
Enyimba’s next game is away to Mazembe, while Coton Sport welcomes Al-Hilal
