Chairman of African Union Fact-Finding Committee Affirms its Commitment to Contribute to Normalization of Sudanese - Chadian Relations

 

Al-Fasher, Nov. 6 (SUNA)- Former President of Burundi and chairman of the African Union fact-finding committee on the relations between Sudan and Chad, Pierre Buyoya, has affirmed the African Union commitment to contribute to normalization of the relations between Sudan and Chad. During the committee's meeting with the Wali (governor) of North Darfur State, Osman Yousif Kibir, and members of the state's government Thursday, Buyoya said that their visit to North Darfur State came in the context of implementing the decision of the African Peace and Security Commission for fact-finding about the reasons behind deterioration of the Sudanese - Chadian relations, and to get informed about the efforts of the two countries for peaceful co-existence. He said that the committee will finally submit an integrated report to the African Peace and Security Commission on its mission in Sudan and Chad. Buyoya said that the visited Chad in last October and held talks with the Chadian authorities, parties and the civil society organizations on the causes of the tension in the relations between Chad and Sudan and the ongoing efforts to enhance the bilateral relations. He said that the committee also met with the mission of UNAMID in Al-Fasher in the same regard. He said that Darfur issue shall be solved through political negotiations, but not through holding arms. Buyoya referred to the people's relations and mutual interests between Sudan and Chad. Meanwhile, the Wali of North Darfur State, Osman Yousif Kibir, briefed the visiting delegation on the security and humanitarian situations in the state. He affirmed the government readiness to sit for negotiations with the armed movements in Darfur without pre-conditions. Kibir said that some parties in the international community are responsible for sending negative signals, a matter which is prolonging and complicating Darfur issue. MO/MO
