Chad, Sudan resume relations

Nairobi/Khartoum - Sudan and Chad restored diplomatic ties after six months of no diplomatic contact, a news report said on Monday.

The two neighbouring African countries broke all diplomatic ties six months ago on mutual accusations of supporting rebel groups in the other country.

Sudan accuses the government in N'Djamena of support for rebels in its Darfur province, who earlier this year almost reached the capital Khartoum.

Chad, on the other hand, accuses Sudan's leaders of being the power behind rebels in the east of their country.

The strife torn western Sudanese province Darfur borders rebel-held areas in eastern Chad, where a troops of the European Union EUFOR mission are deployed to protect the civilian population and tens of thousands of refugees.

According to the BCC both sides agreed at a meeting in the Libyan capital Tripoli not to further support rebel movements and stop media campaigns against the other country. - Sapa-dpa
