Ban Ki-moon addresses opening session of African summit, calls on Justice and Equality Movement to withdraw from Mihajriyah

 

Addis Ababa, Feb. 2 (SUNA) - The official sitting of the 12th. Session of the summit conference of the African Union started Monday in Addis Ababa, where Sudan's delegation is led by President of the Republic Field Marshal Omer Al-Bashir. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called in his address to the opening session of the summit, whose theme is development of the infrastructures in the African continent, on all parties concerned with Darfur issue to work for realizing peace through negotiations. Ki-moon called on the rebel Justice and Equality Movement to withdraw from Mihajriyah area in Darfur to prevent deterioration of the situation. The UN Secretary General pointed out that the UNAMID was able to deploy 60% of its force by the end of last December, calling on all states that promised to extend support and troops to do so. Meanwhile, Mr. Ki-moon described what happened in Palestine of killings as unacceptable by all standards, saying that he will exert efforts to make the cease-fire realized there a permanent one. The UN Secretary General pledged to work with the African Union to realize development in the continent. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of the African Union, Jean Ping, pointed out that efforts are being exerted for starting peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and the armed movements in Darfur. He called on all concerned parties, especially the armed movements in Darfur, to sit without preconditions for peace negotiations. The AU Commissioner referred to the efforts exerted for the deployment of the hybrid operation for peacekeeping in Darfur, pointing out that by next March 80% of the UNAMID troops would be deployed. Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Arab League Amru Musa, addressing the opening session, hailed Sudan's efforts for realizing peace. He said the Arab League and the African Union held a meeting in Doha, Qatar, to work for starting the peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and the armed movements in Darfur. Tanzanian President and chairman of the current session of the African Union Jakaya Kikwete, on his part, pointed out that the movements of the International Criminal Court impede the peace efforts in Sudan. He lauded the efforts of the government of Sudan for realizing peace in southern Sudan and implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. BT/BT
