Advisory Council for Human Rights welcomes release of Sudanese detainees from Guantanamo

 

Khartoum, May 4 (SUNA) - The Advisory Council for Human Rights and the National Committee on International Human Law welcomed the release of journalist Sami Al-Haj and his companions from Guantanamo prison, commending their patience over empriosnment, calling for closure of the denetion center for good as well as releasing the remaining Sudanese detainees. A joint press statement issued Sunday by the Advisory Council for Human Rights and the National Committee for International Human Law highlighted the role played by the Advisory Council for Human Rights in addressing the Human Rights Committee under procedure 1503 which in turn addressed the US administration on the reasons behind the detention and called for release of the detainees. The statement also referred to the meetings held with the lawyers of the Sudanese detainees as well as to the memorandum prepared by the Council for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calling for release of the detainees. The statement further commended the role played by the International Committee of the Red Cross in conveying messages to the detainees as well as its current attempts to allow those who are under detention to make a telephone call with their relatives once every month. The joint statement also praised the efforts exerted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and Sudan Embassy in Washington besides the voluntary organizations, top of which the International Civil Aid Organization and the Sudanese Bar Union in leading popular campaigns to release the detainees.
