The United Nations honors a female Sudanese researcher as part of the UNEP champions of the Earth: By Taha Yusuf Hassan

Geneva, April 24 (SUNA)- The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has honored seven leading international figures, as UNEP champions of the Earth 2008 including a Sudanese researcher in the field of environment, Dr Balgish Osman Alasha. The winners include Prince Albert II of Monaco, Dr Balgis Osman-Alasha of Sudan, the former US Senator Timothy E. Wirth of the United States and Abdul-Qader Ba-Jammal, the former Prime Minister of Yemen Liz Thompson. The Executive Director of the Programme, Achim Steiner, has addressed the ceremony saying that the 2008 winners shade light on the opposite direction so that officials would take decisions and concede to making changes happen through a number of questions. Helen Clark, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, was awarded the prize for her efforts to use renewable energy to a percentage of 90% by the advent of 2025. The prize was established in the year 2004 to honor individuals for their local, regional and international contributions in boosting the protection of the environment and resources. MA/MA
