In Memory of Father Lino Wur Abyei

With a great shock and disbelieve I received Sunday morning of September, 28,2008 as did the Abyei Ngok community in U.S.A in particular and Southern Sudanese in general, the news of passing away of our great beloved uncle Lino Wur Abyei. Lino Wur was a father figure and education pioneer with out whom many years would have elapsed with no educated, enlightened dinkas. He was the founder along side late Nyok de Kuol in 1944 of Abyei Primary School, which had graduated many educated sons of Ngok de Abyei.

Wur: his given name in Dinka means a big wooden stick log which is always erected in the middle of the Dinka holy shrine to hold all the ornaments and gifts to the lord. It also means a big wooden stick log which holds drums (loor, pl. lur) that upon their pounding the Dinkas express themselves in happiness in form of singing and dancing. As meaningful as his name he was truly the Wur on which every bit of Ngok de Abyei blessings, happiness, and enlightenments rested. Upon completing his education out side the Ngok land, he returned with a mission of educating the Ngok people and his effort did not go in vain as many educated sons and daughters of the Ngok today are grand testimony of his hard works and loving heart. His education role did not stop in Ngok land alone; he taught in many areas in Bahr el Ghazal and the rest of Sudan. In the family front father Wur produced, and raised the finest and the bravest of all children a Dinka man can dream of. Among them is commander Edward Lino Abyei of SPLM/SPLA and one of the bravest sons that Southern Sudan have ever produced.

As we mourn and celebrate at the same time the death and life of uncle Lino Abyei, in behave of Abyei Community in U.S.A. I extend our condolences to the family of Wur Abyei where ever they may preside. We also pray that may almighty God comfort their hearts and ours. Father Abyei you will be always in our hearts and thoughts for ever, so please may you rest in Peace.
