DUBAI - He can be described as a walking, talking human computer, able to absorb and calculate numbers in the billions and trillions all in his head. And he can calculate the square and cube roots of almost any number, and yet the school system in his native Sudan has branded him as retarded and an autistic. He is 17-year-old Mamoun El Sheikh Haboub
A mathematical genius by any standard, his early school days were marked by an unwillingness to sit in class with other children of his own age. He would, instead, go to the higher classes and looking through the window during math lessons he would solve complex math problems written on the blackboard even before the teacher.
The school system in Sudan, however, was either unable or unwilling to find a place for Mamoun where his skills would be put to good use and where he would get a well-rounded education. A gifted, soft-spoken teenager with a gentle smile, Mamoun and his father spoke to Khaleej Times about his predicament.
Father and son have been in the UAE trying to find the right institution for Mamoun and trying to get a medical opinion that would shed light on Mamoun's condition and potential with the right training and education. But having spent six months in the UAE, Mamoun and his father are set to go back home before the end of the week.
Mamoun's father, Al Sheikh Haboub Fadelallah, said: "We brought Mamoun's case to the attention of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services and we have referred him to a psychiatric hospital in Abu Dhabi. A report issued by German experts recommended that he be referred to a specialised institute where his potential can be fully realised, but such an institute is unavailable in the UAE and, in Sudan, we tried to get support but failed.
"Mamoun's skill in math was recognised early on but due to the fact he has not had regular schooling no one could find a place for him." Mamoun's father is a refrigeration engineer from Sudan's Kassala province, but he has moved to Khartoum to try to help his son.
Mamoun was accepted in a computer course at El Neelein University in Khartoum from April to December 2002 and a report issued by the university states: "We have taught him numerical systems and he has been able to transform numbers from any numerical system to any other numerical system and sometimes he was able to propose new numerical systems. We started teaching him logical mathematics but we have been confronted by his inability to deal with equations or algebra in general despite his knowledge of logarithms and other mathematical skills."
The report suggested that Mamoun is a special case who would need special treatment that would focus on bolstering his weaknesses - reading and writing - and recommended leaving mathematics to be dealt with at a later stage. The report also touched on his hyperactivity, which his father said has dissipated over time.
"German experts who examined and tested Mamoun have recommended he be transferred to a specialised institution, but I haven't the financial resources to send Mamoun abroad as I have two families to support back home in Sudan. "Mamoun has made great progress. He has memorised 18 chapters of the Holy Quran. He has outstanding mathematical talent and an amazing memory that can retain extraordinary amounts of information although he never had formal schooling," Mr Fadelallah said.
In social situations Mamoun seems timid and never initiates conversation. He prefers the company of adults, which could be the result of the teasing he was subjected to from other children during his early school days, as even the school administration treated him differently.
Mr Fadelallah and his son are still hopeful they will get a favourable response from the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services
