Striking the Balance between Allowing Artists the Space to be Creative, and Constructively Criticizing them: It is very natural when such an issue, as the performance of the "Brides of the Nile" be put for public debate, that it would ignite such diverse reactions. Every person will look at it from his own point of view, his own angle, based on his own perspective, values system, social underpinnings and personal orientation. And most may agree on some general points, despite this diversity. Art to some is an obligation, a noble mission, while to others, might be the passport to hell. When such drastic outlooks exist, we should expect to see such oceans separating our views and the question remains, how much space should the Artists be allowed? What has greatly disappointed me though in the series of posts, was the aggressive and at times offensive and demeaning tone, of many posts, and really quite unnecessarily. I believe that we should all try to be Constructive, not Destructive, to such personal valuable initiatives and attempts. I believe that is what led Kostawi to invite criticism of Tamadour’s performance.
Her is a novel experience Tamadour is undertaking on our behalf as Sudanese, in the Diaspora, which is a huge responsibility that I believe warrants our support not scorn , our appreciation, not disrespect, our open mindedness, not dogmatism. Let us try to stop rushing into putting people down and tearing them apart like that, and help channel our views respectfully to build, not erode. Tamadour has courageously assumed a critical responsibility aiming, I believe to place our beloved country on the Cultural map in the US. What a noble mission!. Why can't we all help her accomplish that mission by taking a deep breath and laying down some constructive points that will help her resume her efforts rather than attacking her and belittling her life accomplishments? For those of you living in the US, you will no doubted understand the importance and effectiveness of these cultural efforts at these sad times we are living in, and how much it takes to make it all the way up, into reputable entities such as the Kennedy Center. This is an achievement we should all applaud. I was there at the Kennedy Center and felt very proud to merely see Sudan been represented within that international forum, and thought that the performance was colorful and attractive, and it literally ignited the hall , and the audience to which it was directed, came out feeling very impressed and touched. Now having said this, and in order to contain this discussion within reasonable useful boundaries, and to prevent it from spilling over and diluting its message, one can think of more than one way to improve this performance: And here are few comments that I hope Tamadour will find helpful:
1. I would like to suggest that she prepares a well- written and articulated presentation about each dance and its cultural background. This will help her send her message clearly and professionally, while always bearing in mind that her audience know little about Sudan, if anything at all. 2. Regarding the Bridal dance, I believe that the main difficulty lies on how should an artist make a true representation of this cultural dance and present it to the public, without taking it from its private setting, and what are the risks associated with doing that? Bearing in mind that some aspects of our culture are quite problematic in real life, and within their own private setting, let alone when brought to the general public.
Despite its artistic appeal, I admit that for instance, I personally have a real problem with a woman standing in revealing clothes, to show her body, even on a private setting in front of women only, let alone in front of men audiences too, and this will naturally lead us to another crucial question:
Should we accept culture unquestionably as being our culture.., even if it contains these troublesome aspects?, and should we criticize the Artist who wants to represent that Culture or may be the Culture itself? 3. I also suggest that Tamadour continue tapping on the original sources of all of these dances and thoroughly keep researching to make a true representation. 4. I truly believe that artists once suffocated and smothered will simply die, so let’s allow them the space they need to be creative while maintaining our right to constructively criticizing them, but with respect and appreciation of what they are trying to accomplish.
5. Finally Tamadour, you will not be able to please everyone and that should not be your objective, but you should rather keep thriving to do your best towards making the most honest representation of Sudanese culture, while expecting some risks and pitfalls, associated with this huge undertaking .
