Dear Abu Sandra,
The splitting of Haq to different fractions is a sad story for sure and we hope they come together and we all learn the lesson. However, what matter at the end is the product of the political organization and whether their thinking as a group or their vision is going to help in solving political and social problems in Sudan or not, and that is the real challenge. If the group or the political organization fails to address the right issues it will turn to a useless social network that can only address the psychological needs of it’s members and not more than that. In this case it will continue the status quo for only few generations and fade away.
If you compare the communist party with Haq, yes it is relatively stable, however this stability remains temporal as long as the party persuades unity at the expense of ideas and here I am talking about the group thinking. Regardless of the real issues facing the communist part which still lives on the old Marxism and this is not what I am talking about now, my concern is the way the historical leadership is running the party is based on how to keep the party united, for how long we don’t know, what will be the outcome of the 5th convention? We also don’t know if it is held and we just hope it will. The policy of hanging on to the unity of the party without real changes is like waiting for a miracle to happen. This policy is also dangerous to the outcome of the convention and please be aware of that.
We all think that decisions made by the group are better than decision made by only one person .Be careful this common sense statement is not true. In fact many times decisions made by the group turned to be worse than those made by individuals!!! Even in democratic and elected institutions. In his book entitled Groupthink Irving Janis (1982) analyzed some of the most ill-fated policy decisions made in the US White House. Among them were the decision to invade Cuba in1961(the Bay of Pigs invasion, to escalate Vietnam war during the late 1960s and to cover up the famous Watergate burglary in the early 1970s. Janis concluded after intensive investigations, by saying that each of these decisions came out because a tightly knit clique of presidential advisers, whose principals concerns were upholding groupunity and pleasing their leader (President Kennedy in case of Cuba, Johnson in case of Vietnam, and Nixon in case of Watergate, failed to examine critically the choice that their leader seemed to favour and instead devoted their energy to defending that choice and suppressing criticism to it.
Please notice Abu Sandra , I am not talking about politics in a sense that I am supporting the interference of the US on others affairs neither I am trying to undermine the struggle of people against the invasion. I am talking about the technical choices to achieve their goal regardless whether I support it morally or not.
Another example, is the bad decision to launch the U.S. space shuttle Challenger in below –freezing weather, have been attributed to bad groupthink.
I hope I made my point clear splitting to several fractions can have the same bad impact as unity at the expense of groupthink. In both the product is big zero or rather a disaster.
