SUDAN:INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT SECRETARY OF STATE, HILARY BENN MEETS SUDANESE FOREIGN MINISTER DR MUSTAFA OSMAN ISMAIL (12/05/04)
The Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn MP, met the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Dr Mustafa Osman Ismail, today in London. Commenting on the meeting Hilary Benn said: "I discussed the grave situation in Darfur with the Sudanese Foreign Minster. I made clear my serious concern over the desperate humanitarian situation there. I impressed upon him the urgent need to improve access for humanitarian agencies, and to ensure security for the local population. Dr Ismail set out the Government of Sudan’s commitment to the current ceasefire and to rein in the Janjaweed militias, which are responsible for many of the worst atrocities. Dr Ismail welcomed the presence of international observers under the auspices of the African Union, noting their central role in improving the situation on the ground. Dr Mustafa also undertook to immediately cut visa and travel permit processing times to 48 hours for each so as to enable humanitarian workers to reach Darfur quickly. "We also talked about the progress of the peace talks with the SPLA in Kenya. I underlined the UK's commitment to supporting the implementation of the peace agreement with progress in Darfur being an important factor in enabling this support to be forthcoming."
