Dear Amin
Indeed the role of the Baath Party in the military coup of Ramadan is intriguing, and need to be addressed in more details. The Baath, like its rival in 1970s, and 1980s , SCP, is also failing in explaining its role in the Sudanese military establishment up to this moment. Most of the Sudanese elites are over looking the role of the Baath in the Sudanese politics. Itis true that the Baath Party was a small party, and had a little influence in 1970s, and 1980s, but what is not known to most of the political analyists is the fact that small party was very close to ascend to power in Sudan in 1980s, and in Ramadan 1990. The statement made by Jadeen didn't help either in understanding the magnitude of the the Baath leading role in the Ramadan military coup. In my preparation to teach a seminar on the " Army and Politics in Africa: Case of Sudan," at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, I conducted interviews with some ex army officers living in the Sudanese Diaspora. One of them, Brigadier Medani Abdeljalil informed me in an interview on July 6th,1997, Arlington, Virginia, the U.S, on the active role of the Baathists cells in the Sudanese armed forces in 1980s, and the open competition between the Baathists, and Islamists to recruit the army officers
As a student at the University of Baghdad during the period 1974- 1978, I observed the
efforts by the Baath party to recruit, or influence the Sudanese army officers who were sent
to Iraqi military academies. I also have been informed by three Sudanese officers, in a dinner at the house of the representative of the United Nations in Iraq, the late Omer Abdelhamid Adeel during June 1975, about the intensive efforts by the Baath to recruit the Sudanese trainees at the Iraqi military academies. Itis worthmentioning that Colonel Saeed Kisbawi played a major role in recruiting Sudanese army trainees in Iraq to the Baath. Colonel Kisbawi was a pilot, and former member of the free officers in 1960s. He was also a close friend of the late, Farouk Hamadallah. He later on joined the ranks and files of the Baath Party while he was in exile in Baghdad in 1970s
The Sudanese branch of the Baath Party in 1970s, 1980s, and
early 1990s was under direct supervision from the national command of the Baath Arab Socilaist Party based in Baghdad. The Sudanese Branch of the Baath was also imitiating
the experience of its big brother, the Iraqi Baath. The Iraqi Baath path to power shows that a small party like the Baath in Iraq, with a good organizational structure, finance, can penetrate the military establishment, ally itself with non Baathists, and even agents of foreign intelligence in the army to ascend to power through tanks. ( See the case of the alliance between the Baathists officers in Iraq, and Abdelrahman Aldaoud and others in July 17th military coup). The Sudanese Baath party tried to copy cat the Iraqi experience
to ascend to power. Itis true that some independents, unioinsts, and at least one Nasserist in his high school days, participated in Ramadan military coup, but neither the Unionists, nor the Nasserists had active cells in the Sudanese army in the 1980s, and 1990s. The only active party in planning for Ramadan military coup was the Baath Arab Socialist Party( I read few months ago an article written by a fromer Baathist military officer about Ramadan military coup in Sudanyat forum). Itis the high time for the leaders of the two factions of the Baath in Sudan (The faction led by Eltigani Mustafa is not included) to provide the details, and the truth about the the Baath role in the Sudanese military establishment in general, and Ramadan military coup in particular
