Wahhabism Past and Present: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad
http://frontrow.bc.edu/program/delong
Natana Delong-Bas, an adjunct professor in Boston College's theology department, is the author of Wahhabi Islam: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad (2004). She discusses how Wahhabism became virtually synonymous with terrorism in the aftermath of 9/11 and why it is generally understood by Westerners to be an extremist and violent form of Islam associated with the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Delong-Bas reexamines the stereotypical connection between Wahhabism and jihad, drawing on evidence from the 18th-century writings of the founder of this system of thought, Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab. Delong-Bas is introduced by Jonathan Bloom, the coholder of the Calderwood Chair in Fine Arts at Boston College.
