Dear all,
This letter is to invite you to attend the international conference on the Role of the Sudanese Diaspora after the CPA: Prospects for Peace, Reconciliation and Justice. The one day meeting which will be held on April 8, 2006, at the Institute of Social Studies in the Hague.
The conference is organized by New Sudan Organizations Network (NSON) with the support from Novib Oxfam and NCDO.
Central theme of the conference is how the Sudanese Diaspora in Europe can organize itself better in its contribution towards peace and development at home.
Late 2004 NSON organized an international conference on the crisis in Darfur in The Hague. Since then a lot has occurred. The conference was successful in that it led to a dialogue between the Diaspora of several European and North American countries and stakeholders in the peace and development process in Sudan: the Government of Sudan, the SPLM, the JEM, the SLA and other opposition groups. During the conference there was an intensive dialogue between the Diaspora and the Dutch Foreign Ministry and Dutch NGOs.
Since then much has happened. The CPA was brought about, while the crisis in Darfur continued. The post-CPA progress is slower than many had hoped early 2005. Having peace, be it for the time being only in the South, raises the question what Sudan should do with the past decades of internal strife, immense suffering and underdevelopment. How will the country be able to come at peace with itself? The conference is meant to discuss these developments.
But the aims of the conference go beyond that. A large part of Sudan’s educated potential is abroad and willing to contribute to improvements in Sudan. In many European countries Sudanese have been intensifying their efforts for peace and development. Many Sudanese are supporting development projects at home. Among Sudanese in ten cities in the Netherlands multi-ethnic, multi-religious peace talk groups have been discussing what is dividing the Sudanese and what can bring them together. The conference should make these efforts more visible, so as to enable the Diaspora to strengthen its constructive role in peace and development in Sudan.
The one day conference has been divided in two major parts. During the morning session recent developments will be talked about. Apart from contributors and discussants there will be ample room for input by the audience. Stakeholders in Sudan accuse each other of having committed serious wrongdoings. Many have suffered or are still suffering tremendously; they have lost beloved ones, and property. What should Sudan do with this? What lessons can it learn from other countries in Africa? In the morning session we will also discuss what has been realized of the CPA and how far has peace and development progressed in other parts of the country.
The afternoon session will be about the role of the Diaspora. In all countries with Sudanese Diaspora,
Sudanese are supporting development projects. What are their experiences? What are the strong points, what are bottlenecks? In this session representatives of Sudanese Diaspora from France, England, Germany, and the Netherlands will briefly highlight their activities and discuss how they can strengthen each other. We will see whether there is a need for more intensified international exchange among the Diaspora. Sudanese in the Netherlands will tell about the multi-ethnic, multi-religious peace talk groups in ten cities, which was a follow up of the 2004 international conference. What have been the results of it? Is it a model which can be applied in other countries? The session will end in a discussion of the preparations of a peace caravan to several cities in Sudan as an activity aiming at reconsolidating the message of peace aired by the Sudanese Diaspora community in the Netherlands and Europe.
The last part of the conference will be the making of rather practical and operational conclusions.
