نيلسون مانديلا..مسيرة حـياة مع الحرية

في مثل هذا اليوم، قبل نحو نصف قرن، كان الآلاف يصلون من أجله أيضاً، لكن ليس بغرض شفاء يبدو بعيد المنال، بل للنجاة من حكم إعدام قد تصدره محكمة عنصرية، ففي الـand#8236;12 من يونيو عام and#8236;1964 تحديداً، سطر المناضل نيلسون مانديلا فصلاً من «مسيرة طويلة نحو الحرية» لنفسه وشعبه، رغـم الحكم عليه بالسجن مدى الحياة، إذ ظل يواصل مقاومته لنظام التمييز العـنصري، حـتى وهـو وراء جـدران معـتقل، تهاوت بعد and#8236;27 عاماً قضـاها مـانديلا خلفها.
في معتقل بجزيرة معزولة، وفي ليال مظلمة، غافل فيها سجانيه، كتب نيلسون مانديلا سيرته الذاتية، وحاول أن يهربها الى الخارج، لكن لم يفلح في ذلك هو ورفاقه، كما روى في سيرته «مسيرة طويلة نحو الحرية»، الذي يحوي جانباً كبيراً من قصة حياة المناضل الرمز، واعتمد نيلسون مانديلا في كتابه على كثير مما ذكره في مخطوطاته الأولى التي حاول تهريبها من السجن.
تحفل السيرة، التي ترجمتها الدكتورة فاطمة نصر، وصدرت ضمن سلسلة مكتبة الأسرة بمصر قبل ثلاث سنوات، بمرادفات الحرية والعدالة والكرامة والمقاومة، وغيرها من الكلمات التي يستدعيها مجرد ذكر نيلسون مانديلا، واللافت أن المناضل الذي تدهورت حالته الصحية أخيراً، ويصارع في المستشفى من أجل الحياة، لم يحاول إضفاء هالات على حياته، بل سرد في صفحاتها أحداثاً قد لا تروق للبعض، خصوصاً ممن يعتبرون الرجل أسطورة عصرية، وأيقونة ذات بريق باهر.
إنسانيات
خاتمة
ختم الزعيم نيلسون مانديلا مذكراته بسطور تعلن مرحلة مختلفة، وتلخص مسيرة حياته قائلا: «لم أولد وعندي فهم للحرية، فلقد ولدت حرا قدر معرفتي عن الحرية، كنت حرا أن أجري في الحقول قرب كوخ والدتي، وحرا في أن أسبح في القناة الصافية في قريتي وأمارس النشاطات الصبيانية الأخرى. لكن في جوهانسبرغ رأيت ببطء ليس فقط أنني لست حرا، بل إن جميع من هم على لوني لا يتمتعون بالحرية، والتحقت بالمؤتمر الوطني الإفريقي، وعند ذلك تبدل فهمي لحريتي بفهم أكبر لحرية شعبي. وخلال تلك السنوات الطويلة تحول فهمي لحرية كل الناس، بيضاً وسودا، فقد كنت أعلم أنه لابد من تحرير الظالم من الكراهية والتحيز وضيق الأفق. وحينما خرجت من السجن كانت مهمتي هي تحرير الظالم والمظلوم، وقد يقول البعض إنه تم إنجاز ذلك، لكني أعلم أن هذا غير صحيح، فقد خطونا الخطوة الأولى فقط على طريق أطول وأصعب، فلأن تكون حرا لا يعني فقط أن تلقي بقيدك، لكن أيضا أن تعيش بطريقة تحترم وتعلي من حريات الآخرين. ولقد سرت ذلك الطريق الطويل نحو الحرية، وحاولت ألا أتعثر، لكنني اتخذت خطوات خاطئة على الطريق. وقد اكتشفت السر أنه بعد أن يكمل الإنسان تسلق تل يكتشف أن هناك تلالاً أخرى كثيرة عليه تسلقها. لقد أخذت لحظة هنا للراحة لأسترق النظر الى ذلك المشهد المجيد الذي يحيط بي، وأنظر خلفي الى المسافة التي قطعتها، لكنني لا أسطيع التوقف سوى لحظة، لأن الحرية تأتي بمسؤوليات، ولا أستطيع الإطالة، لأن مسيرتي لم تنته بعد».
روى مانديلا في «مسيرة طويلة نحو الحرية» مراجعاته لذاته، ولحظات الضعف الإنساني التي اعترته خلال رحلة الكفاح الطويلة، وقوفه أمام نفسه ومساءلته لها: ما الجدوى من كفاح يقود الى المعتقل؟ وما ذنب الأسرة الصغيرة؟ ولم يخف صاحب السيرة أساه عندما علم بوفاة أمه وهو في السجن، وكذلك عندما جاءه خبر موت ابنه في حادث سيارة، ولم تسمح له السلطات بحضور جنازته.
تبدأ السيرة بفصل بعنوان «طفولة في الريف»، إذ ولد دوليهلاهلا (الاسم الأصلي لمانديلا قبل أن تمنحه إحدى معلماته في ما بعد اسم نيلسون)، في قرية مفيزو بمنطقة ترانسكي التي تبعد مئات الأميال عن جوهانسبرغ، في الـand#8236;18 من يوليو عام and#8236;1918، لوالد بمثابة زعيم قبيلة، لكن لم تستمر زعامته طويلا، إذ كان ضحية لحكم جائر من «سيد أبيض»، فقد على إثِره تلك المكانة والثروة أيضاً، ورحل الوالد والابن في التاسعة من العمر، لينتقل مانديلا الابن الى وصي يقوم على شأنه وتربيته.
تلقى نيلسون مانديلا تعليمه، وحاز شهادة متوسطة، والتحق بعدها بالجامعة، لكنه تركها نتيجة تمسكه ببعض مواقفه، واصطدامه برئيس تلك الجامعة، الذي اعتبره مانديلا أحد البيض المستبدين.
لم تتبلور أفكار المناضل الشاب خلال تلك المرحلة المبكرة من حياته، بل على العكس من ذلك، كانت أقصى أمانيه أن يصير «جنتلمان إنجليزيا»، يرى في النظام البرلماني الغربي قمة الديمقراطية، وعاش خلال تلك المرحلة منبهراً بنمط الحياة الإنجليزي، الى أن ترك الإقليم الذي يستقر فيه، ورحل إلى مدينة جوهانسبرغ. الطريف أن قصة الرحيل كانت بمثابة رحلة هروب من عروس، فالوصي الذي كان يرعى شؤون مانديلا تخير له فتاة، وحاول تزويجه بها، إلا أن الشاب آثر ترك المكان، والتمرد على ذلك التقليد، وكأنه يعلن عن جانب من شخصيته العنيدة.
تمييز عنصري
في المدينة الكبيرة، فتح مانديلا عينيه على مظاهر البؤس التي يحياها كثير من الملونين، أفارقة وهنودا، وقبلها سياسة التمييز العنصري وضحاياها: «كانت جريمة أن تدخل من باب مخصص للبيض، وجريمة أن تركب حافلة للبيض، وجريمة أن تستعمل صنبور مياه للبيض، وجريمة أن تسير على شاطئ مخصص للبيض، وجريمة أن توجد في الشارع بعد الحادية عشرة مساء، وجريمة ألا تحمل دفتر تصاريح، وجريمة أن يكون هناك توقيع خطأ في الدفتر، وجريمة أن تكون عاطلا، وجريمة أن تصل في المكان الخطأ، وجريمة أن تسكن في المكان الخطأ، وجريمة ألا يكون لك سكن. كنا نسمع يومياً آلاف الإهانات التي يلقاها الأفارقة في حياتهم».
التحق مانديلا في بداية استقراره بالمدينة بالعمل في أحد المناجم، عاش أياماً صعبة، وذاق مرارات كثيرة، مثل الآلاف من أبناء شعبه، دخل بعد حين الجامعة، وحصل على إجازة الحقوق، وصار محامياً للفقراء، انغمس في هموم السود، وانخرط كذلك في العمل السياسي، وحزب المؤتمر الوطني الإفريقي، صار بعد فترة أحد أبرز وجوهه، وطاف أرجاء كثيرة في بلاده، ودخل في صراعات بالجملة مع السلطات، خصوصاً بعد دعوات الاضرابات والعصيان المدني.
أصبح مانديلا أحد وجوه النضال في بلاده ضد الابارتايد (نظام التمييز العنصري)، تحول الى مطلوب لدى السلطات، يحكي عن تلك الفترة قائلا: «أصبحت مخلوقاً ليلياً، فكنت لا أخرج لعملي إلا في الظلام. وفي الأساس كنت أعمل في جوهانسبرغ، لكنني كنت أسافر إذا استدعى الأمر. كنت أقيم في شقق خالية، وفي منازل الآخرين، وفي أي مكان يمكن أن أكون فيه وحيداً وغير مرئي. وعندما كنت أعيش مختبئاً كنت لا أسير طويلاً معتدل القامة، وكنت أتكلم بصوت خفيض من دون وضوح أو تميز، وكنت لا أسأل عن أي شيء، بل كنت أترك الآخرين يخبرونني عما أعمل. وكنت غالباً ما أتخفى كسائق أو طباخ أو بستاني، وكنت أرتدي الزي الأزرق، أو زي عمال الزراعة».
مصر
تحول مانديلا في مسيرة النضال للوصول الى الحرية، من الشاب الذي يرى طوق النجاة في اتباع النهج الغربي، حيث التحضر والثقافة، إلى مناضل عنيد يعد إفريقيته حلا لأزمات العنصرية في بلاده، بل وفي القارة السمراء كلها، استطاع الهروب من جنوب إفريقيا، وتواصل مع زعماء دول تحاول التحرر والنهوض، وزار العديد منها، فحل في إثيوبيا والسودان، واطلع على تجارب المقاومة في الجزائر، والتقى ثواراً في المغرب، وكانت له وقفة خاصة مع مصر تحديداً، مع حضارتها القديمة، ومشروع التحديث الذي حاول إرساءه الراحل جمال عبدالناصر، يقول مانديلا عن ذلك في سيرته الذاتية: «كانت مصر قد تملكت مخيلتي وأنا طالب كمهد للحضارة الإفريقية وكنز لجمال الفن والتصميم، وكنت دائما أرغب في زيارة الأهرام وأبو الهول وعبور نهر النيل أعظم أنهار إفريقيا، ذهبت الى القاهرة وقضيت يومي الأول في المتحف أفحص القطع الفنية، وأدون الملاحظات وأجمع المعلومات عن نمط الرجال الذين أسسوا حضارة وادي النيل القديمة، ولم يكن اهتمامي اهتمام هاوياً للآثار، فإن من المهم للأفارقة القوميين أن يتسلحوا بالبرهان الذي يدحضون به ادعاءات البيض بأن الأفارقة لم تكن لهم في الماضي حضارة تضارع مدنية الغرب. واكتشفت في صباح واحد أن المصريين كانوا يبدعون أعمالا فنية ومعمارية عظيمة، بينما كان الغربيون في الكهوف. وكانت مصر نموذجا مهما لنا، فقد كان أمامنا على الطبيعة برنامج الإصلاح الاقتصادي الذي أطلقه جمال عبدالناصر. فقد حدد الملكية الخاصة للأراضي الزراعية، وأمم بعض قطاعات الاقتصاد، وكانت له الريادة في بدء برنامج سريع للتصنيع وجعل التعليم ديمقراطياً، وبنى جيشا حديثا. وكان كثير من تلك الإصلاحات بالتحديد ما يطمح المؤتمر (الوطني الإفريقي) إلى أن يحققه، وكان الأهم بالنسبة إلينا في ذلك الوقت أن مصر كانت الدولة الإفريقية الوحيدة التي تمتلك جيشا وأسطولا بحريا وجويا يمكن أن يقارن بذلك الذي تمتلكه جنوب إفريقيا».
سجن
بعد مرحلة من التخفي، والخروج سرا من البلاد والعودة إليها، ومطاردة المخابرات، تم إلقاء القبض على نيلسون مانديلا، وفي إحدى جلسات محاكمته دخل بزي قبيلته الإفريقي المميز، ما أثار حفيظة السلطات، وصادرت ذلك الزي، واستمرت الجلسات فترة طويلة، وحكم على مانديلا بعد ذلك بالسـجن مدى الحياة، وطارت شهرة المناضل إلى جهات العالم الأربع، إذ نقلت صحف عدة دفاعه عن نفسه، ومهاجمته للنظام العنصري في بلاده، واعتباره سبب مآسي شعبه، مؤكداً أن قضيته ليست موجهة إلى كره البيض، بل العمل على خلق وطن ديمقراطي يتمتع فيه الجميع بالمساواة، ويعيشون معا في سلام، ولم يخف المناضل الإفريقي قناعاته بما دفع «المؤتمر الوطني» الى انتهاج وسائل مقاومة غير سلمية، بعدما أغلقت السلطات كل سبيل في وجه أعضائه.
لم يضعف الحكم بالسجن المؤبد نيلسون مانديلا، بل أعلن أنه كان مستعدا للموت في سبيل قضية تحرر شعبه، ولم يندم على المسافات الطويلة التي قطعها نحو النور والحرية، بل وعمل وهو في السجن على إبقاء جذوة الكفاح مشتعلة، فتواصل مع مسجونين سياسيين، للوقوف على أخبار المقاومين في الخارج، رغم نفيهم في سجن بعيد في جزيرة معزولة.
حمل نيلسون مانديلا راية التمرد في المعتقل، إذ رفض في البداية الزي الذي كان يوزع على المساجين السود تحديداً، إذ رفض أن يرتدي الشورتات القصيرة، التي تظهر المساجين السود كأنهم صبيان فاقدو الأهلية، رفضت سلطات السجن تذمر المناضل نيلسون مانديلا، واقتادته الى حبس انفرادي. لم يكن ذلك فصله الأول والأخير مع رفض استبداد السجان، إذ عمل على تحسين أحوال المحبوسين، وليس حاله هو تحديداً، مرة مع الطعام، ومرة مع تخفيف العمل، وتوفير ظروف شبه إنسانية للمسجونين.
عمدت السلطات العنصرية إلى تضييق الخناق على نيلسون مانديلا ورفاقه في السجن، فرضوا عليهم أعمالاً شديدة الصعوبة، تفتيت صخر، وعمل في المحاجر، ونوم في غرف رطبة، وطعام شديد الرداءة، وعزل عن العالم الخارجي، ومنع زيارات إلا مرة في العام، وتمزيق رسائل قادمة من الأهل، وغيرها من صور المضايقة التي لجأت اليها سلطات السجن، لكي يتخلى مانديلا وغيره من المناضلين عن قضيتهم، وينسون ما يدور هناك في السجن العنصري الكبير، خارج الجزيرة المعزولين فيها.
and#8236;27 عاماً
يفصل مانديلا في سيرته الذاتية يوميات السجن، ويمنحها مساحة كبيرة، فهي and#8236;27 عاماً، وليست مجرد فترة عابرة، ولا ينسى المناضل الجنوب إفريقي أن ينسب بعض الفضل لأهله، فالصورة لم تكن شديدة العتمة طوال تلك الأعوام، فثمة أيام خفف وطأة محبسه فيها سجان يتعاطف، يمرر إليه بعض الأشياء، جرائد أو أوراقا، أو طعاما مختلفا، أو ملابس جديدة.
في نهاية الثمانينات، ظهرت طاقة نور في النفق المظلم، تصاعدت الاحتجاجات في خارج السجن، في ساحات جنوب إفريقيا، وطالب زعماء وقادة دول بإطلاق سراح مانديلا، ما دفع رئيس جنوب إفريقيا حينها إلى الدخول في مفاوضات مع السجين المناضل، شريطة تخليه ورفاقه عن نهجهم القديم، وإدانتهم لما يقوم به مناصرو «المؤتمر الوطني». لكن مانديلا رفض الاشتراطات، وأجبر السلطات على الجلوس معهم والتفاوض بلا أي تنازلات، ونقل مانديلا إلى سجن آخر، وخلال تلك الفترة التفاوضية تحديداً كان شبه مطلق السرح، يقيم في استراحة خاصة، حتى تم الإفراج عنه في and#8236;1990.
استقبل نيلسون استقبال الأبطال، وخطب في شعبه في العديد من المدن، صدم السلطات التي كانت تظن أن السجن قد أوهن عزيمته، وأنه قد وصل الى أقصى ما يتمناه من شهرة، إذ أعلن نيلسون مانديلا عن مواصلته السير في درب المقاومة حتى يواصل أحلام شعبه، وينهي تماماً نظام التمييز العنصري في بلاده، وينعم الكل في وطنه بالمساواة والكرامة الإنسانية، بل وأعلن أنه في هذه السجن مستعد للذهاب إلى السجن مرة أخرى، من أجل استكمال مسيرة الحرية التي بدأها وهو شاب. اعترفت السلطات بالمؤتمر الوطني، ولم يعد هناك حظر على أعضائه، وعلى غيره من المنظمات، كما تم الإفراج عن المسجونين السياسيين، وتم هدم نظام الابارتيد، لتشرق شمس جديدة على جنوب إفريقيا، بفضل مانديلا ورفاقه.

يتذكر الأخ الأصغر غير الشقيق لنيلسون مانديلا،يتشيكيتشي آرون موريس مانديلا زيارات أخيه الراحل الذي عرف ياسم "ماديبا"، التي قام بها للعائلة في بلدة "قيونو" من مدينة مخيكيزوينا التي تلقى فيها دراسته بعد رحيل والده.
كان يأتي لزيارتنا في نهاية الأسبوع.
كان يصل يوم الجمعة، وحين كان يعود يوم الأحد كنت ارافقه إلى مخيكيزويني على ظهور الخيل، ثم أعود إلى بلدتي مصطحبا الحصان الذي امتطاه.
كان دائما يشجعنا على الاهتمام بالعائلة والاهتمام بالمواشي. كنا كسولين ولم نكن نرغب بالذهاب إلى المراعي مع المواشي، وكان ماديبا يغضب منا، وكان أحيانا يضربنا، وهو شيء كان طبيعيا في تلك الأيام.
أذكر هذا لأنه لم يكن يروق لوالدتي، وكانت تحذر ماديبا من فعله.
كنت أغضب ، لكن بعد أن يضربني كنت أذهب إلى المراعي لفترة طويلة، والغريب أنه كان حينها يفتقدني.
كان يحب المبارزة بالعصا، وكان يعلمنا كيف ندافع عن انفسنا بهذه الطريقة.
المراوغ
أحد أقدم اصدقاء مانديلا، ماكسويل بامباتا، يتذكر أيامهما الحافلة بالمشاكسات معا.
المبارزة بالعصي
المبارزة بالعصي
ولدت في نفس السنة التي ولد فيها، ولعبنا معا لفترات طويلة.
كنا نتسكع طويلا في المنطقة بحثا عن التوت البري، كان هناك الكثير من التوت البري في تلك الايام.
كنا نستمتع بلعبة المبارزة بالعصي. وبعد ان ننتهي من المبارزة، كان يذهب للتزحلق على الحجارة مع تلاميذ المدرسة. ثم كان يذهب لإحضار مواشي والده إلى البيت.
وهناك شيء أتذكره جيدا: كنا نحب زيارة مخادع البنات في الليل، ونتسلل تحت الأغطية ونحشر أنفسنا بينهن، فتستيقظ البنات ويهربن.
كان هذا مقبولا وقتها.
السجين
رفيق السجن أحمد كاثرادا يتذكر حياتهما المشتركة في سجن جزيرة روبين.
كان يتحلى بانضباط عظيم ، فمثلا حين كان يسمح لنا في أعياد الميلاد بشراء الحلوى والبسكويت كان يحتفظ بما يشتريه حتى 18 يوليو/تموز، وهو يوم ميلاده وويوم ميلاد رفيق آخر في السجن هو فيكيلي بام.
كان يحتفظ بالحلوى ليهديها لرفيقنا.
لم يكن أي منا قادرا على الاحتفاظ بحصتنا طوال تلك الفترة.
كان مثابرا، وقادرا على إنجاز كل ما يتعهد بإنجازه بإتقان، فمثلا حين كان يعمل تحت الأرض استعدادا للبدء بالكفاح المسلح طلب منا أن نحصل على كل الكتب الممكنة عن الكفاح المسلح من حرب Boer إلى الكفاح المسلح الفلسطيني وحرب الفليبين.
عندما كان يهتم بالبستنة في جزيرة روبين حاول الحصول على كل الكتب الممكنة عن البستنة.

هل صدفة، كونو اكبر اسم، في عالم اليوم، مجسد لافضل مافي البني ادم، من مثل واخلاق، صادف او كان ابن سوداء؟
رغم انف اغلال العبودية والقهر الواقع بحق السود في عالم اليوم؟
امثال تاتشر او ريغان من غلاة السيادة البيضاء، اللي حاولو اغتيالو بتصويرو كارهابي، ورغم انف سطوتم المطلقة علي عالم اليوم، اين هم من حيث المكانة، في عالم اليوم، مقارنة بالاسطورة مانديلا؟
وبذات القدر اري في مراة وجه مانديلا، وجوه المعذبين في بطون الكهوف في جبال النوبة، او صحاري دارفور.
عندما تمكن مانديلا من تجسيد شخصية الافريقي علي السجية، مبراة من الاستلاب، من اول او جديد، وقف العالم مشدوها كما وقف اول مرة هيرودتس ابرز مؤرخي الحضارة الغربية المهيمنة علي مقادير عالم اليوم، وهتف قائلا عن اجداد مانديلا:
انهم اجمل الناس، واعدل الناس قاطبة.
طريقة تعامل الافريقي مع الاخر المختلف حقيقة اسلوب وطريقة متفردة، ولذا فهي اساس اسطورة شخضية مانديلا في عالم اليوم.
من استماعي المتواصل لحديث البيض تحديدا عن شخصية مانديلا، اجد انبهارهم بعدم ميل مانديلا الي معاملة مضطهديه بالمثل.
هم لا يدرون، كيف الاستعلاء العنصري في الاساس ارث ثقافي، وافد ودخيل علي وجدان الثقافة الافريقية، وذلك لاسباب موضوعية محددة، مقارنة بمرجعية الثقافة الارية كمثال.
لاوجود لمفهوم قومية، اجني، ووافد، وما شابه في مرجعية، ثقافة مانديلا، من حيث الاصل وتاريخيا.
ده السبب، بطول وعرض افريقيا، نجد الاجنبي هو رب البيت، والافارقة اصحاب الارض هم الضيوف!
يا ضيفنا، لو زرتنا، لوجدتنا، نحن الضيوف، وانت رب المنزلِ!
مانديلا كان واعي جدا، انو قائد او مش عاهر سياسة.
قالها لي تد كبل في برنامجو الشهير Nightly News في محطة الABC المعروفة، عندما حاول حشر مانديلا في الزاوية، بسبب وفائه للعقيد الليبي قذافي:
انا قائد ولست بسياسي.
نعم مانديلا كقائد ما كان بحسب مواقفو، بقيس او يوزن مواقفو بي ميزان الربح والخسارة، في بنك الرصيد!
كان بميل انو يعمل الصاح، لانو صاح، بغض النظر عن التكلفة او المردود، كما يفعل عاهري السياسة!
ده ذات طريقة تفكير كبارنا في اي بيت.
بقولو ليك سوي الواجب، بغض النظر، لانو صاح، او من دون استخدام لي اي الة، حاسبة!
عايشت احداث زيارة مانديلا لي امريكا عن قرب.
يا الهي!
كان حدث تاريخي بمعني المفردة.

وداعآ من قال.
*اننا نقتل أنفسنا عندما نضيّق خياراتنا في الحياة.
*التسامح الحق لا يستلزم نسيان الماضي بالكامل.
*العظمة في هذه الحياة ليست في التعثر ولكن في القيام بعد كل مرة نتعثر فيها.
*لا يوجد شيء مثل العودة إلى المكان…الذي يبقى بدون تغيير لتجد فيه ما عدلته بنفسك.
*ان الانسان الحر كلما صعد جبلاً عظيماً وجد من ورائه جبالاً أخرى يصعدها.
*الحرية لا يمكن أن تعطى على جرعات، فالمرء إما أن يكون حراً أو لا يكون حراً.
*الجبناء يموتون مرات عديدة قبل موتهم ، والشجاع لا يذوق الموت إلا مرة واحدة.
*أما جسم الإنسان فيتكيف مع أي ظروف قاسية, كما أن المعتقدات الراسخة هي سر البقاء في ظروف الحرمان.
*إني أتجول بين عالمين ، أحدهما ميت والآخر عاجز أن يولد …وليس هناك مكان حتى الآن أريح عليه رأسي .
*إذا خرجت من السجن في نفس الظروف التي اعتقلت فيها فإنني سأقوم بنفس الممارسات التي سجنت من أجلها.

من زنزانته في سجن روبن آيلاند إلى معركته الأخيرة ضد الزمن، شغل نيلسون مانديلا الصفحات الأولى للصحف ومحطات الإذاعة والتليفزيون في جميع أنحاء العالم، ناعية إياه، وناقلة ردود فعل متأثرة بوفاته أمس عن 95 عامًا.
كانت هيئات التحرير تتوقع منذ فترة طويلة وفاة أول رئيس أسود لجنوب إفريقيا، ومتأهبة لنشر ملفاتها التي تروي مسيرة هذا الرجل ضد نظام الفصل العنصري.
وفي بلاده صدرت معظم الصحف بالأبيض والأسود، وصدر بعضها بلغة "الكوزا" التي ينتمي إليها مانديلا، واستخدمت اسم "ماديبا"، وهو الاسم الذي يطلقه عليه أهل بلده، وعنونت معظم الصحف "هامبا كالي ماديبا" (ارحل بسلام ماديبا).
وكتبت صحيفة "دي بورغر" التي تصدر بلغة الأفريكان "لقد رحل"، أما صحيفة "سويتان" فكتبت: "وداعًا تاتا" (وداعًا يا أبي).
أما صحيفة "ذي ستار" فقد عنونت "العالم يبكي" و"جنوب إفريقيا في حداد" وحُرمنا من "بطل الإنسانية".
وفي صورة رمزية لتضحيته من أجل حرية بلاده وتحقيق العدالة لشعبه، اختارت مجلة "نيويوركر" صورة لمانديلا في شبابه، بينما نشرت مجلة تايم صورة أحدث لماديبا، يظهر فيها بشعره الرمادي وقد رفع قبضته إلى أعلى.
وكتبت صحيفة الجارديان البريطانية أن "التوافق بين الأحداث وطباعه الشخصية جعل من مانديلا شخصية غير عادية".
وفي فرنسا أعلنت صحيفة "ليكيب" الرياضية نبأ وفاة مانديلا بوضع شريط مع العنوان، وكتبت أن "مانديلا الذي كان يحب الرياضة التي استخدمها عنصرًا لتوحيد جنوب إفريقيا كان مثلاً أعلى لكثير من الرياضيين في العالم".
وفي مقابلة مع صحيفة "لوباريزيان"، قال المدافع عن البيئة نيكولا أولو إنه سمى ابنه "نيلسون" تكريمًا لمانديلا.
ونظرا لإعلان وفاته في وقت متأخر، لم تتمكن صحيفة لوفيجارو من تخصيص أكثر من صفحتين لوفاته، بينما لم تُشر الطبعة الأولى من "ليبيراسيون" إلى هذا الحدث إطلاقًا.
وعنونت مجلة "دير شبيجل" الألمانية في نسختها الإلكترونية "بطل الحرية"، وقالت: "برحيله فقد العالم أحد كبار المناضلين ضد القمع، أحد سياسيي هذا العصر الذي نظرًا لمقاومته الأبارتايد في جنوب إفريقيا، أمضى عشرات السنين في السجن"، والمعروف أن "الأبارتايد" مصطلح يشار به إلى نظام الفصل العنصري.
وعنونت صحيفة "بيلد" الألمانية الشعبية "مات نلسون مانديلا (1918-2013)". وقالت: "مات الرجل الأكثر نزعة إلى السلمية في العالم"، وأضافت "العالم حزين على هذا البطل الوطني لجنوب إفريقيا".
وفي إيطاليا وصفته صحيفة "كوريري ديلا سيرا" بأنه "بطل أسقط الأبارتايد".
بينما وصفته صحيفة "البايس" الإسبانية بأنه "الرجل الذي دحر العنصرية"، وخصصت له 13 صفحة، ونشرت مقالاً للكاتب الأرجنتيني التشيلي آرييل دورفمان الذي قال عنه: "الرجل الذي كان يزرع حديقته في السجن"، وكتب: "كان يحب الزراعة والقطاف تحت المطر وتحت الشمس، مدركًا أنه بممارسته سلطة في حدها الأدنى على قطعة أرض صغيرة، يمكنه أن يحفظ كرامته وذكرياته ووفاءه لأصدقائه".
وشكلت وفاة مانديلا مصدر تعليقات لا نهاية لها على صفحات التواصل الاجتماعي، حيث عبر كثيرون عن حزنهم لوفاته، وكتب يوين شان الأستاذ في كلية الصحافة في هونج كونج أن "مانديلا مصدر وحي فيما أمكن انجازه لمكافحة القمع"، بينما كتب وزير الخارجية السويدي كارل بيلت على موقعه على تويتر أن مانديلا "عملاق زماننا".
كان مانديلا قد ولد في 18 يوليو عام 1918 وقضى عمره في مكافحة نظام الفصل العنصري في بلاده، الأمر الذي أدى للحكم عليه بالسجن 27 سعامًا منذ عام 1962 حتى أطلق سراحه عام 1990، ومنح جائزة نوبل للسلام في 1993 قبل أن ينتخب رئيسًا لبلاده عام 1994 ليكون أول رئيس أسود لجنوب إفريقيا، واستمر حتى عام 1998، استطاع خلال هذه الفترة أن يرتب أوضاع بلاده ويوفق بين الفصائل المتناحرة، وظل داعية للسلام في العالم كله حتى تقاعد عام 2004، ولكنه واصل نشاطه الداعم للحريات حتى 2009 قبل أن يقعده المرض الذي زاد عليه في الأشهر الأخيرة حتى لفظ أنفاسه الأخيرة في 5 ديسمبر الماضي.

شكرا حزينا حبيبنا عثمان وانت تسلط الاضواء على عظمة الشامخ مانديلا رغم مأساة الرحيل.
كتبت الديلي ميل البريطانية نعيا تحت عنوان:" وفاة عملاق" فيما كتبت ذي صن نعيا تحت عنوان:" وفاة زعيم العالم".
وفي سياق الاحزان المنهمرة من عواصم العالم اصدر السيد فوميو كيشيدا وزير الخارجية اليابانية بيانا جاء فيه:
1- لدى تلقينا نبأ رحيل فخامة السيد نيلسون روليهلاهلا مانديلا،الرئيس الاسبق لجمهورية جنوب افريقيا، فإن الحكومة اليابانية تود ان تعرب عن صادق التعازي القلبية إلى اسرته المكلومة وإلى حكومة وشعب جمهورية جنوب افريقيا.
2- لقد كان الرئيس الاسبق لجمهورية جنوب افريقيا مناضلا ومناهضا لنظام الاباراتيد حيث قضى 27 عاما في السجن. لقد حُفر اسمه في وجدان التاريخ بالقضاء على نظام الفصل العنصري وتعزيز المصالحة بين الاعراق. لقد اصبح عام 1994 اول رئيسا لجمهورية جنوب افريقيا ما بعد إلغاء نظام الفصل العنصري.
3- لقد زار الرئيس الاسبق السيد مانديلا اليابان ثلاث مرات، بما فيها زيارة رسمية عام1995. ولقد إلتقى الرئيس الأسبق السيد مانديلا آنذاك بجلالة إمبراطور اليابان واسهم في تعزيز العلاقات مع قادة في العديد من المجالات ونشطاء المجتمع المدني الذين شاركوا في حركة مناهضة نظام الفصل العنصري.
4- وإجلالا لذكرى الإنجازات العظيمة للسيد مانديلا، فإن حكومة اليابان تتمنى بأن يتمكن شعب وحكومة جنوب افريقيا من التغلب على هذا الحزن الاليم وأن يواصلوا العمل من اجل المزيد من الرخاء للبلادهم".

South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95.
Mr Mandela led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison for his political activities.
He had been receiving intensive medical care at home for a lung infection after spending three months in hospital.
Announcing the news on South African national TV, President Jacob Zuma said Mr Mandela was at peace.
"Our nation has lost its greatest son," Mr Zuma said.

Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela - who is known affectionately by his clan name, Madiba - had died shortly before 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT). He said he would receive a full state funeral, and flags would be flown at half-mast.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was one of the world's most revered statesmen after preaching reconciliation despite being imprisoned for 27 years.
He had rarely been seen in public since officially retiring in 2004. He made his last public appearance in 2010, at the football World Cup in South Africa.
His fellow campaigner against apartheid, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, said he was "not only an amazing gift to humankind, he made South Africans and Africans feel good about being who we are. He made us walk tall. God be praised."
BBC correspondents say Mr Mandela's body will be moved to a mortuary in the capital, Pretoria, and the funeral is likely to take place next Saturday.
'Bid him farewell'
Mr Zuma said in his statement that "what made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human. We saw in him what we seek in ourselves.
"Fellow South Africans, Nelson Mandela brought us together and it is together that we will bid him farewell."

The greatest father there ever was: this is how South Africans will remember the man who brought an end to apartheid and delivered the nation from the brink of civil war.
Social networking sites are abuzz with messages of condolences and messages of gratitude to the late statesman. He had been in and out of hospital in recent years and had become increasingly frail but many South Africans had continued to express their unreadiness to lose him.
As he did in life, his passing has brought unity amongst South Africans as black and white speak of their love for him. Many here will be drawing on that same spirit for strength, that "Madiba magic" over the next few days and weeks as the nation left with the great burden of honouring Mr Mandela's legacy, mourns his passing but also celebrates his life.
Tributes have come in from around the world. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was "a giant for justice and a down-to-earth human inspiration".
"Many around the world were greatly influenced by his selfless struggle for human dignity, equality and freedom. He touched our lives in deeply personal ways."
US President Barack Obama said Mr Mandela achieved more than could be expected of any man.
"He no longer belongs to us - he belongs to the ages," he said, adding that Mr Mandela "took history in his hands and bent the arc of the moral universe towards justice".
Mr Obama, the first black president of the United States, said he was one of the millions who drew inspiration from Mr Mandela's life. He has ordered that the White House flag be flown at half-mast.
FW de Klerk, who as South Africa's last white president ordered Mr Mandela's release, called him a "unifier" and said he had "a remarkable lack of bitterness".

World reactions
He told the BBC Mr Mandela's greatest legacy "is that we are basically at peace with each other notwithstanding our great diversity, that we will be taking hands once again now around his death and around our common sadness and mourning".
The Elders - a group of global leaders set up by Mr Mandela to pursue peace and human rights - said they "join millions of people around the world who were inspired by his courage and touched by his compassion".
The group's chair, Kofi Annan, said the world had lost "a clear moral compass".
"While I mourn the loss of one of Africa's most distinguished leaders, Madiba's legacy beckons us to follow his example to strive for human rights, reconciliation and justice for all."
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said "a great light has gone out in the world".
Earlier this year, Mr Mandela spent nearly three months in hospital with a recurring lung infection.
He was moved to his home in the Houghton suburb of Johannesburg in September, where he continued to receive intensive care.

He and other ANC leaders campaigned against apartheid. Initially he campaigned peacefully but in the 1960s the ANC began to advocate violence, and Mr Mandela was made the commander of its armed wing.
He was arrested for sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964, serving most of his sentence on Robben Island.

FW de Klerk: Mandela "was a great unifier"
It was forbidden to quote him or publish his photo, but he and other ANC leaders were able to smuggle out messages of guidance to the anti-apartheid movement.
He was released in 1990 as South Africa began to move away from strict racial segregation - a process completed by the first multi-racial elections in 1994.
Mr Mandela, who had been awarded the Nobel Prize in 1993 jointly with Mr de Klerk, was elected South Africa's first black president. He served a single term, stepping down in 1999.
After leaving office, he became South Africa's highest-profile ambassador, campaigning against HIV/Aids and helping to secure his country's right to host the 2010 football World Cup.
He was also involved in peace negotiations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and other countries in Africa and elsewhere.

10 حقائق قد لا تعرفها عن نيلسون مانديلا
من أبرزها اسمه الحقيقي وأكلته المفضلة وغيرهما
نيلسون مانديلا.. اسم ذاع صيته في كل أنحاء العالم وتقلد الكثير من الأوسمة والألقاب، يعرفه القاصي والداني والصغير والكبير، كيف لا وهو أشهر رموز الحرية والكرامة الإنسانية. إلا أنه وكغيره من الشخصيات العامة ترك في سجل حياته حقائق لا يعلمها سوى المقربين، وتخفى عن النسبة الأكبر من العامة لتُدفَن برحيله بين سجلات سيرته الذاتية.. اخترنا لكم 10 من أبرز تلك الحقائق المثيرة للدهشة عن الراحل نيلسون مانديلا نقلا عن شبكة «سي إن إن» الأميركية:
1 - عاش وعرف بعيدا عن اسمه الحقيقي، حيث كان اسمه عند ولادته «روليهلاهلا مانديلا»، وتعني «روليهلاهلا» سحب فرع من شجرة، أو المشاكسة في لغة «خوزا»، إحدى اللغات الرسمية في جنوب أفريقيا، أما اسم «نيلسون» فقد أعطي له من قبل معلمته في أول يوم له في المدرسة الابتدائية. كان ذلك في أوائل عام 1920، وكان الأطفال الأفارقة حينها يُعطون أسماء إنجليزية حتى يسهل نطقها من المستعمرين البريطانيين في ذلك الوقت.
2 - كان له دور تمثيلي في فيلم للمخرج سبايك لي؛ ظهر في دور مدرس وهو يردد مقولة شهيرة للحقوقي الأميركي «مالكوم إكس» في آخر مشهد من فيلم «مالكوم إكس» عام 1992 للمخرج الشهير سبايك لي، إلا أنه رفض النطق بعبارة «إذا كان ضروريا بالفعل» خشية استخدامها من قبل حكومة الفصل العنصري في بلاده ضده، مما اضطر مخرج الفيلم «سبايك لي» إلى الاستغناء عن المشهد.
3 - الاحتفاء باسمه تخطى الأماكن العامة ليصل لاختراعات علمية وفصائل من الطيور: تحمل كثير من شوارع مدن العالم اسم مانديلا، إلا أن أغرب ما يحمل اسمه هو طائر من فصيل نقار الخشب، أطلق العلماء عليه اسم مانديلا، بجانب إطلاق علماء من جامعة ليدز على جزيء نووي اسم «جزيء مانديلا».
4 - تزوج السيدة الأولى في بلدين، فقد اقترن بغراسا ماشيل قبل 15 عاما، عقب وفاة زوجها رئيس موزمبيق الراحل، سامورا ماشيل، لتصبح بذلك أول سيدة أولى في بلدين.
5 - كان بارعا في التخفي، تحديدا أثناء حقبة حكومة الفصل العنصري في بلاده، وتطلق عليه وسائل الإعلام لقب «عشبة كزبرة الثعلب السوداء»، نظرا لحنكته في مراوغة الشرطة.
6 - ولعه بالرياضة: بجانب السياسة كان مانديلا شغوفا برياضة الملاكمة، وقال فيها: «لا أستسيغ العنف بالملاكمة، أكثر ما يجذب اهتمامي هو التطبيق العلمي فيها.. كيف تحرك جسمك لحماية نفسك، وكيف تستخدم خطة للهجوم ومن ثم التراجع».
7 - أكلته المفضلة هي «الكوارع والكرش»، تناول وجبات مختلفة مع أشهر قادة العالم التي كانت معدة على يد أمهر الطهاة، إلا أن وجبته المفضلة تتمثل في أحشاء الحيوانات النباتية (حيوانات المزارع)، أو ما يعرف لدينا بالكوارع والكرش.
8 - استقالته من وظيفته اليومية: استقال من عمله الذي يكسب به قوت يومه لدراسة القانون في جامعة «ويتواتيرسراند» بجوهانسبورغ، وافتتح مكتبا للمحاماة كان الأول لمواطن أسود في جوهانسبورغ عام 1952.
9 - وجوده في قائمة الإرهاب الأميركية: كان على لائحة مراقبة الإرهاب الأميركية حتى عام 2008، وحذف اسمه، بجانب أعضاء حزب «المؤتمر الوطني الأفريقي» نظرا لنضالهم ضد التمييز العنصري، عندما بلغ سن 89 عاما.
10 - استمد إلهامه من الشعر: كان الشعر ونيسه في سجن جزيرة روبن لعقود. من أبرز الشعراء الذين كان يقرأ لهم في سجنه الشاعر ويليام أرنست هينلي، وكان من أبرز تلك القصائد التي كانت تدعم الصمود وعدم الاستسلام وتبث روح التحدي في نفسه.

Obama Mourns Death of Icon Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela led black South Africans in their struggle to throw off the yoke of white rule and then helped the entire nation heal the wounds of racial division.

But his message of perseverance, respect and forgiveness didn't just heal South Africa. He also inspired people in countries far and wide in their fights against authoritarian rule.
The measure of his influence was in the varied and immediate outpouring Friday from people around the globe in response to his death. In South Africa, people held his image in the streets, but they did so in the Palestinian territories as well. South Africans lowered their flags to half-staff, but so, too, did Europeans and Americans.
Several African countries declared three days of mourning, and traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange stood quiet for a minute before the market opened. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared that a Brooklyn high school will be renamed The Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice.
As leaders and citizens, athletes and artists remembered Mandela, many struggled to find words big enough to describe the man who changed the face of South Africa and inspired a continent and a world: a colossus, a father figure, a giant baobab tree providing shade for an entire nation.
Many noted that Mandela's legacy would not go with him. It would live on, for example, in the freedom of the Eastern bloc countries and the example he set for other African ones.

"He no longer belongs to us. He belongs to the ages," said President Barack Obama.
As a summit on peace and security in Africa opened in Paris, many leaders vowed to live up to the model he set, but his legacy is also an uncomfortable one for other leaders on a continent where many cling to power and amass riches while their populations suffer.
In Gambia, for instance, intellectuals and public servants quietly wondered if the death of the South African icon would serve as a wakeup call to President Yahya Jammeh, who has ruled his West African nation with an iron fist, accused of imprisoning, torturing and killing his opponents, including journalists. Jammeh has yet to comment on Mandela's death.
AN INSPIRATION FOR STRUGGLING PEOPLE THE WORLD OVER
In Haiti, a Caribbean nation that became the world's first black republic in 1804 through a successful slave revolt, Mandela symbolized the struggle for black equality.

"Mandela is not only the father of democracy in South Africa, but is also a symbol of democracy," said Haitian President Michel Martelly. "And like any symbol, he is not dead. He is present in all of us and guides us by his lifestyle, his courage and faith in the true struggle for equality."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India compared Mandela to his country's own icon for the struggle for freedom, independence leader Mohandas K. Gandhi.
"A giant among men has passed away. This is as much India's loss as South Africa's. He was a true Gandhian. His life and work will remain a source of eternal inspiration for generations to come."

Palestinians have pinned photos of Mandela on Israel's separation barrier to draw a parallel between his struggle against apartheid and theirs against Israeli occupation.
Several dozen demonstrators marched from the West Bank village of Bilin to the nearby barrier Friday, chanting "Mandela, Mandela" and pinning 20 photos of the former South African leader to the wire mesh fence.

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot in the head by the Taliban and now campaigns for girls' right to education, paid tribute to Mandela, whom she called "my leader."
"Nelson Mandela is physically separated from us, but his soul and spirit will never die," Yousafzai said in a statement.

"God was so good to us in South Africa by giving us Nelson Mandela to be our president at a crucial moment in our history," Archbishop Desmond Tutu said. "He inspired us to walk the path of forgiveness and reconciliation, and so South Africa did not go up in flames."

"Nelson Mandela was convinced that it is not hatred and revenge that make the world better, but reconciliation and political change — and that is how he lived," German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters in Berlin. "That is why he is a giant of history, a statesman with a message that is valid in every country and at every time."
AN UNCOMFORTABLE LEGACY
Robert Mugabe, whose wasted Zimbabwe is often held up as the counterpoint to Mandela's multiracial, prosperous South Africa, has yet to comment on Mandela's death. Mugabe recently criticized Mandela for being too conciliatory to whites.

But Zimbabwe's opposition hailed him as an icon.
"Africa should continue to produce more Mandelas who think more about the people than personal power; for whom the people's welfare is more important than the selfish pursuit of personal power and glory," said opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Speaking under condition of anonymity, a top official at the Gambian Civil Service, who could not be named for fear of reprisal, said President Jammeh should emulate the leadership qualities that Mandela had shown.
"Our president should be the first person to reflect on Mandela's legacy," he said.

أعلن متحدث باسم وزارة خارجية جنوب أفريقيا أن زهاء ستين رئيس دولة وحكومة أكدوا حتى الآن أنهم سيحضرون إما مراسم التأبين أو الجنازة الرسمية لمانديلا. وصلى الملايين من سكان البلاد الأحد في أول أيام الحداد على روح مانديلا.
قال متحدث باسم وزارة الخارجية في جنوب أفريقيا لرويترز إن 59 رئيس دولة وحكومة قالوا حتى الآن إنهم سيحضرون إما مراسم التأبين أو الجنازة الرسمية لنلسون مانديلا الأسبوع القادم. وأضاف: إن العدد النهائي لمن سيحضرون مراسم التأبين في جوهانسبرج يوم الثلاثاء أو الجنازة في كونو يوم الأحد القادم سيتأكد في حينه. وسيمثل ألمانيا في مراسم الجنازة الرئيس الاتحادي يواكيم غاوك، حسب وكالة الأنباء الألمانية (د ب أ).
ومن جهته قال رئيس جنوب أفريقيا جاكوب زوما إن وفاة مانديلا "خسارة غير مسبوقة" للبلاد. جاء ذلك خلال قداس كنسي اليوم (الأحد) تكريما لأيقونة مناهضة الفصل العنصري (الأبارتايد).
وأضاف زوما، وإلى جانبه زوجة مانديلا السابقة ويني ماديكيزيلا- مانديلا، وحفيد الزعيم الراحل، ماندلا مانديلا، أن الزعيم الحائز على جائزة نوبل للسلام ناضل من أجل العدالة والمساواة للجميع. وتابع زوما أنه من المهم "ألا ننسى بعض القيم التي دافع عنها، وناضل في سبيلها، وضحا بحياته لتحقيقها".
وذكر زوما مئات الأشخاص الذين حضروا القداس في كنيسة ميثودية بضاحية بريانستون في مدينة جوهانسبرغ، أن مانديلا ناضل ضد هيمنة البيض والسود. ولم تتحدث ماديكيزيلا- مانديلا، التي بدا أنها لا تستطيع الحفاظ على رباطة جأشها، إلى الحشد المشارك في القداس.
الملايين صلوا من أجل روح مانديلا

وفي رام الله أقام الفلسطينيون الأحد قداديس إحياء لذكرى مانديلا، رمز مكافحة الفصل العنصري والذي كان داعما قويا لإنهاء الاحتلال الإسرائيلي. وشارك مسئولون من منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية ونحو 200 شخص في قداس أقيم في كنيسة العائلة المقدسة وترأسه بطريرك اللاتين السابق ميشيل صباح. ووضعت صورة لمانديلا في الكنيسة وصورة أخرى تظهره مع الزعيم الفلسطيني الراحل ياسر عرفات.

Nelson Mandela, former South African President and anti-apartheid icon, passed away last Thursday at the age of 95. World leaders are joining South Africans for his memorial service.
JOHANNESBURG — Celebrating one of his personal heroes, President Barack Obama praised Nelson Mandela as the last great liberator of the 20th century, urging the world to carry on his legacy by fighting inequality, poverty and discrimination.
At a memorial service in Johannesburg, Obama compared the former South African President to Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln. He said Mandela had earned his place in history through struggle, shrewdness, persistence and faith.

"For nothing he achieved was inevitable," Obama said. "In the arc of his life, we see a man who earned his place in history through struggle and shrewdness, persistence and faith. He tells us what's possible not just in the pages of dusty history books, but in our own lives as well."

In a rain-soaked stadium where world leaders gathered to honor the anti-apartheid leader, Obama traced the influence that Mandela's story has had on his own life, disclosing that he asks himself how well he's applied Mandela's lessons to himself as a man and as president.
He said in the U.S., South Africa and around the world, people must not allow progress that's been made to cloud the fact that more work must be done.

"We, too, must act on behalf of justice. We, too, must act on behalf of peace. There are too many of us who happily embrace Madiba's legacy of racial reconciliation, but passionately resist even modest reforms that would challenge chronic poverty and growing inequality," Obama said, referring to Mandela by his traditional clan name.

Joining Obama on the 16-hour trip from Washington for the ceremony were first lady Michelle Obama, former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter also attended the memorial service.
Crowds converged on FNB Stadium in Soweto, the Johannesburg township that was a stronghold of support for the anti-apartheid struggle that Mandela embodied as a prisoner of white rule for 27 years and then during a peril-fraught transition to the all-race elections that made him president.

Steady rain kept many people away. The 95,000-capacity stadium was filling up during the ceremony, which began at noon local time with the singing of the national anthem.

The mood, though, was celebratory. A dazzling mix of royalty, statesmen and celebrities was in attendance.
Thabo Mbeki, the former South African president who succeeded Mandela, got a rousing cheer as he entered the stands. French President Francois Hollande and his predecessor and political rival, Nicolas Sarkozy, arrived together. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon waved and bowed to spectators who sang praise forMandela, seen by many South Africans as the father of the nation.

"I would not have the life I have today if it was not for him," said Matlhogonolo Mothoagae, a postgraduate marketing student who arrived hours before the stadium gates opened. "He was jailed so we could have our freedom."

Rohan Laird, the 54-year-old CEO of a health insurance company, said in the stadium that he grew up during white rule in a "privileged position" as a white South African and that Mandela helped whites work through a burden of guilt.
"His reconciliation allowed whites to be released themselves," Lair said. "I honestly don't think the world will see another leader like Nelson Mandela."

Workers were still welding at a VIP area as the first spectators arrived amid an enormous logistical challenge of organizing the memorial for Mandela, who died Dec. 5 in his Johannesburg home at the age of 95.

United States President Barack Obama landed in South Africa early Tuesday. Besides Obama, eulogies were to be delivered by U.N. chief Ban, Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao and Cuban President Raul Castro.
Other speakers include the presidents of Brazil, Namibia and India, as well as tributes from Mandela'sgrandchildren.

Tuesday was the 20th anniversary of the day when Mandela and South Africa's last apartheid-era president, F.W. de Klerk, received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to bring peace to their country.
Mandela said in his acceptance speech at the time: "We live with the hope that as she battles to remake herself, South Africa will be like a microcosm of the new world that is striving to be born."

The sounds of horns and cheering filled the stadium ahead of the ceremony. The rain, seen as a blessing among South Africa's majority black population, enthused the crowd.

"In our culture the rain is a blessing," said Harry Tshabalala, a driver for the justice ministry. "Only great, great people are memorialized with it. Rain is life. This is perfect weather for us on this occasion."
People blew on vuvuzelas, the plastic horn that was widely used during the World Cup soccer tournament in 2010, and sang songs from the era of the anti-apartheid struggle decades ago.

"It is a moment of sadness celebrated by song and dance, which is what we South Africans do," said Xolisa Madywabe, CEO of a South African investment firm.

The soccer venue was also the spot where Mandela made his last public appearance at the closing ceremony of the World Cup. After the memorial, his body will lie in state for three days at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, once the seat of white power, before burial Sunday in his rural childhood village of Qunu in Eastern Cape Province.
Police promised tight security, locking down roads kilometers (miles) around the stadium. However, the first crowds entered the stadium without being searched.

John Allen, a 48-year-old pastor from the U.S. state of Arkansas, said he once met Mandela at a shopping center in South Africa with his sons.
"He joked with my youngest and asked if he had voted for Bill Clinton," Allen said. "He just zeroed in on my 8-year-old for the three to five minutes we talked."
