    Sorrows of the Black City

    On the streets of the city
    whenever the night plaits
    lightning above and sprinkles her
    with his profound grief
    you see her hunched in silence
    intent on the cracks. i
    So you think her calm
    but she’s aflame. i

    On the streets of the city
    the darkness forms
    figures of marble then
    tears them down
    in disobedience, i
    its spiral stairs descend
    with beings to a past
    deep…deep, i
    and its coasts of amber
    drown in memories
    on the point of not recovering. i
    It raises in every person a wall
    of clay, diamonds and desires. i

    A night dozes, a day shines. i
    It arranges candles
    for places of gloom and there
    the blood of silence dries;
    the desiccation of the graves. i

    And the heart of the city
    becomes like a wretch
    like a stove in mid-day heat
    like a lamp on a blind man’s path
    like Africa in the dark of ages
    a crone enveloped in frankincense
    a great pit of fire
    an owl’s beak
    a sheep’s horn
    an amulet of ancient prayers
    a night of many mirrors
    a dance of naked blacks
    singing in black joy
    a stupor of sins. i
    The desire of the master torments it
    as do ships laden with beautiful slave girls
    musk and ivory and saffron: i
    gifts without festivity. i
    The wind propels them in every age
    for a white man this time— i
    always for a master. i

    A field extends
    in the imagination of existence. i
    It clothes some naked ones
    others it further strips; i
    its dejection runs in the veins of life
    dyes the colour of the waters
    dyes the face of the God
    mocks the city’s sorrow on every lip
    grows to tyranny
    to slavery
    to iron
    to shackles
    It grows something every new day

    But they, when the dark
    builds obstacles of black stone
    on the streets of the city
    extend their hands in silence
    to the balconies of tomorrow, i
    they are imprisoned screams
    in an imprisoned land
    their days stabbing memories
    for a stabbing land
    their faces, like outstretched palms are sad; i
    you see her hunched in silence
    intent on the cracks. i
    So you think her calm
    but she’s aflame. i
