Clooney calls on Congress to pass sanctions on Sudan

Actor and director George Clooney might be famous for his good looks and on-camera presence, but he's also known for using his celebrity to bring attention to the ongoing violence in Sudan and South Sudan. Wednesday he takes his passion for and expertise on the North African region to Capitol Hill.
The Hollywood superstar is set to speak before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in a hearing titled "Sudan and South Sudan: Independence and Insecurity."
Clooney, who in 2010 co-founded the Satellite Sentinel Project, which aims to capture images of the atrocities being carried out inside the country, is urging Congress to pass sanctions on the government of Sudan.
"We're certainly getting support in the White House and in Congress. We're meeting with Congress because the House is trying to pass a bill right now that has a very good chance of passing that has some pretty robust sanctions," he said on CNN's "Starting Point" Wednesday morning in a preview to the hearing. "We're hoping the Senate will do the same."
He told CNN that, over the past few weeks, his group had obtained pictures of mass graves, as well as bombings of villages. Clooney admitted that on the ground information is "very difficult" to gather, even with satellite technology.
"These are war crimes. When you are indiscriminately bombing innocent civilians you're committing war crimes and that is what they're doing. It's a cowardly act," Clooney said.
When pressed on whether he thought gathering images was doing enough to solve the problem, Satellite Sentinel Project co-founder John Prendergast, who is also testifying before Congress Wednesday, pointed out that photos are only one step in ending the violence.
He said that it is also vital to gather on-the-ground visual evidence, hear from survivors of atrocities and raise the numbers of voters in the United States who want to address the problem.
Straight off of his Oscar nomination for the 2011 film "The Descendants," Clooney secretly visited Sudan, where he traveled from the Nuba Mountains into South Sudan, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
Clooney, who said he just arrived back on Tuesday, told CNN that while he was there he saw a young man with both of his hands blown off, and rockets fly overhead.
"It's very difficult to see these people living in the kind of fear that they have," he said.
The human-rights advocate suggested that one way to help prevent attacks on civilians to is go after the perpetrators' financial assets.
"These guys are not buying their weapons with Sudanese pounds, so find their offshore accounts in places like Malaysia and places like that and freeze them," he said.
He also proposed working with China, which has major oil interests in Sudan, to find a solution.
"Not try to guilt them, but try to work with them, to say, 'listen, you guys are losing 6 percent of your oil import right now from the Sudan because they've shut off the oil,' " Clooney said.
"There's a lot of effort and a lot of people interested in helping right now," he added.
