this is a good essay for a discussion.
I don't agree with Prof. ZeinAlabdin that these mistakes were accidental or marginal.
They were essential sinse the establishment of the MB by AlBanna.
I think their enemosity to Democracy was one of their essential pillars, which was based on religious throritical work. A few groups, like the Tunisians, tried to link their interpretation of Islam to democracy. I expected Turabi to be smart enohgt to go in the same direction when he gaind from democracy, but he disappointed me and took the stupidest decision: the military cvoup.
The second essential problem was that the MB was established as a reaction to the left and democratic and nationalist peoples movement. When the students and workers in Egypt were uprising against the corrupt King in Abbas bridge, the MB marched to express their loyalty to the king. The MB movement was built against the peoples interests and not only the communists. We don't forget also the admiration of Fascism when AlBanna established the paramilitary organization of the movement.
The movemnt also was opportunistic since its establishment when AlBanna advised them no to declare any political platform or programs, the advice they kept till today when they were faced by the reality that the haven't developed any practical program, beyond the rhetoric slogans, when they reached the seats of the parliaments in Egypt and Tunisia. Where I don't expect better practice than the Sudanese MBs.
