Dear Sudaneseonliners
There is one thing I have been wondering about for the last thirty or forty years of Sudan independence, and that is about the generation which replaced the British colonialists on January 1, 1956. This generation is invariably called Heroes of independence. It is the generation that shaped the present-day Sudan that made us all Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers all over the world. Nevertheless, we insist in calling that generation Heroes. I believe the reason for showering them with praises they never deserved is because we lack in our history real Heroes. In my view, not even, Ali Abdel Latif and hisa colleagues qualify as Heroes. As far as Ali Abdel Latif and his colleagues were concerned, their Martyrdom was also, in my view, for the wrong cause, the unity of the Nile Valley.
The so-called Heroes of independence were all failures. They could not sustain their rule. al-Azhari, Mohammed Ahmed Mahjoub, Mubarak Zaroug, Abdalla Khalil, Ali Abderahman and many others lost to soldiers like Abboud, Nimeiri and al-Bashir. In reality, Sudan has had no Heroes, but our fervant desire for Heroes makes us imagine or yearn for Heroes, all of them imagined. They do not deserve to be called heroes, because their fight against the British Colonialists was an armed-chair struggle. Indeed, the British wanted to leave the Sudan in accordance with the wind of change that gripped Britain after the Second World War. Therefore, our so-called Heroes or the armed-chair librators were waiting in the wings to replaced the colonialist. Period.I therefore conclude that the Sudan has had no Heroes. This the reason the unity has been an elusive goal that, in my view, will never be achieved. The cumulative effect of wrong and weak leadership over the last fifty years is a failed state we have today. in fact, Sudan has been unfortunate in the area of leadership. Sudan never had the Nelson Mendelas, the Mahtmas, the Nehros, or even the Nassers. As we were about to get one leader, Dr. John Garang, he had to die before he could achieve his dream of a united, secular, democratic and pluralistic Sudan. Is this not a curse?
