Mystery of Israel and an attack in Sudan A mysterious air strike on a convoy of arms smugglers in Sudan has provoked speculation that Israel has launched an attack hundreds of miles from its borders. By Josh Mitnick in Jerusalem and Sebastien Berger in Johannesburg 11:06PM GMT 26 Mar 2009 The government of Sudan confirmed reports that the attack in January destroyed a convoy of vehicles carrying weapons through the country.
"A convoy of vehicles carrying illegal weapons was bombed near the Sudanese-Egyptian border," said the Sudanese transport minister, Mabruk Mubarak Saleem. He said several people had been killed the attack.
He added that smuggling was rampant in the region and claimed that the arms were destined for the Gaza Strip.
The raid was made shortly after Israel's three-week operation against Hamas in Gaza, and, according to the American television network CBS, was carried out by Israeli warplanes. It said 39 people were killed and that Pentagon sources denied any American involvement.
The Israeli military would not confirm or deny whether it was responsible for the incident. But Ehud Olmert, the prime minister due to leave office next week, added fuel to the fire yesterday when he refused to confirm any Israeli role in the bombing but added that Israel's military was operating both "near and far".
"We are operating in every area in which terrorist infrastructures can be struck," he said. "We are operating in locations near and far and attack in a way that strengthens and increases deterrence. It is true in the north and in the south. Everyone can use their imagination. Whoever needs to know, knows."
Israel has a history of operations beyond its immediate neighbours when it feels its interests are threatened, with examples including the bombing of the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq in 1981 and the destruction of the PLO headquarters in Tunis in 1985.
