Despite boycott, Arman opens wide lead in the South | In the second day of counting, withdrawn SPLM presidential candidate, Cde. Yasir Saeed Arman appears to be leading by far in Southern Sudan.
JUBA (Apr 17) - As counting of votes enters its second day, reports from party agents across southern sector states project the withdrawn SPLM Presidential Candidate Cde. Yasir Saeed Arman leading despite pulling out of the race for the presidency of the republic more than two weeks ago.
In some polling centers in Juba, Central Equatoria State, Cde. Arman consistently got over 200 votes while incumbent president and NCP's Presidentia Candidate, Omer El Bashir, got less than 10 votes.
A similar trend is being reported at polling and counting centers throughout the South.
Other presidential candidates repeatedly got no votes at all except for Abdalla Deng Nhial, presidential candidate for Turabi's Popular Congress Party (PCP), who appears to be doing better than El Bashir in the South.
In the North, however, Cde. Arman predictably did not do well in a race he was never part of.
"We [the SPLM] have boycotted the elections in the North in all levels. We are not taking part in an election that is characterized by massive irregularities and well-designed rigging practices. As such we do not expected to be voted for in an elections that we have decided not be part of," said one SPLM supporter.
SPLM Presidential candidate for the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), Cde. Salva Kiir Mayardit has also been reported to be doing "very well".
On Wednesday 31st of March, the SPLM Political Bureau (PB) announced the withdrawal of its candidate Cde. Yasir Saaed Arman from the Presidential race citing irregulaties and rigging of the elections. The SPLM further decided to boycott elections at levels in the 13 states of Northern Sudan.
The counting of the votes that started yesterday has been proceeding peacefully. All polling centers are expected to submit their results today with the final announcement of the results next Tuesday. http://www.splmtoday.com/
