Did you know that December 3 is International Day of People with a Disability?
Proclaimed by the United Nations in1992, the observance helps to promote and support the rights and issues of people with disabilities globally. It is a day to celebrate and recognize the achievements, contributions and abilities of people with a disability.
There are an estimated 650 millions persons with disabilities around the world today.
That is 10 per cent of the population! The UN convention protects and promotes the rights of these individuals, yet there are still plenty of barriers with regard to participation in civil, economic, social, cultural, and political environments. Too often basic rights such as freedom of expression, legal recognition and freedom from discrimination are denied, forcing the individual to live in the margins of society.
The UN’s theme for 2009 is “Making the Millennium Development Goals Inclusive - Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world”
The idea is to draw attention and provide better understanding of issues regarding disability and mobilize action for the empowerment of persons with
disabilities.
There are number of agencies in this community addressing the needs of persons with disabilities. The North Coast Career Services Society is one such agency and does so through Triumph Vocational Services, located in the Career Resource Centre (Suite 363, Ocean Centre). Triumph is a voluntary employment program for persons with disabilities who are interested in expanding their life and work skills. Triumph recognizes a person’s abilities, not their disabilities.
