Dear Asataza, elajab Elfaya, Adil Abdel Atti, Nassar and Kamal Abbas,
The issue you raised today is an important one; a person should hummer on it and keeps its discussion publicly debated.
Bearing in minds all the issues and criticism you raised about Nivasha, I believe the question that we should be addressing now is: What after Nivasha? Would the signing of the agreement between two parties mean the end of the struggle? Would that mean that problems in Sudan have ended? How can we deal with the results of Nivasha while it excluded the majority of Sudanese? The reason behind my belief is actually coming from the fact that the agreement is about to be finalised soon, and civil society organisations inside Sudan and in the Diaspora have been very active in criticizing the agreement to the international world especially those are involved in Nivasha; they know all the points raised against Nivasha (I assume we all know about the role of the international community in Nivasha). I believe that people should think seriously of other strategies and tactics for the next stages. This does not mean that Sudanese should not criticize Nivasha; we all have the right to do that.
I realise that Nivasha has become a fact, a bitter fact for many of us who feels excluded, and a promising fact for those who were subject to long marginalisation and suffering and for them we should be positive. Meanwhile, we also realise that it has raised the hope of those who try to extend their existence by whatever means that they will continue to rule for sometime.
Exclusion of the majority of Sudanese is a main bitter fact. Because it is also about the destruction of the concept/dream of unity seemed to strongly exist in the NDA, since Asmara declaration of 1995. May be one day people on this list are able to give a thorough analysis to the NDA and the separation between NDA and SPLA even with the existence of co-ordination between them represented in the different meetings between them from time to time.
Nivasha did not include Sudanese who have the full right to discuss whatever political future Sudan should have, for example there was a serious absence of Sudanese civil society organisations including women’s one. At the same time, there was almost a complete marginalisation to women members of the two negotiating parties, (this is another area of discussion we hope to come to it one day- not only Nivasha but also Abuja talks, and NDA meetings in Egypt)
Nivasha also created dispute and suspicious about the SPLA concept of rights of the marginalised, especially in its definition to its movement. The SPLA/SPLM has always claimed that one of its main causes for its establishment is the marginalisation practiced against southern Sudanese, so people may ask, why now practicing the same marginalization on others?
Nivasha also has acted as a message; if people don’t aggressively carry their weapons, then their voices will never be heard!
It is true that issues that are not discussed in Nivasha are leading the country to a very narrow road.
However, having said all that and whatever people think about the SPLA, people must remember it has its own population who dreams of both “unity and/or separated Sudan”, meanwhile, people must remember also that there are other groups of southerners who do not accord with Nivasha.
Will Nivasha bring lasting peace to Sudan?, while I hope it does, I have to say; the way the agreement stands today, will never bring lasting peace, because it is not inclusive, any agreement in Sudan should be addressed with inclusiveness, we all know exclusiveness is one cause behind conflicts. Other conflicting parties in Sudan are not included, and today we hear of more armed groups trying to fight for their rights. But lets go back to southerners, Nivasha is a challenge facing southerners in their own territory whether they are for unity or for separation and same goes for the north.
Now, we have to talk about the beautiful facts because we need to be realistic, and optimists:
Majority of people have the hope to stop the war and have been dreaming about that for long years, we all know the effect of war on people; most of war’ victims are civilian, who died for no reason. For them, and for those who fight in the SPLA Nivasha is the way ahead towards stable and peaceful life for the first time in many generations. It means education for their kids, a house and agriculture, a small business and visits to neighbours, a secured place where kids can stay with their parents and all of that. It is the hope to live without having to die, or to be displaced or to be refugees, the hope to be equal in their own country and treated as citizens, one step towards a consideration to their own identity and entity and not that one enforced on them. It is the recognition to “their” existence and a restoration for their lives.
Whatever opinion people may have about Nivasha agreement, Sudanese will definitely have a different form of political situation during the interim period the challenges now are how to use this for a strong and inclusive agenda and how to use the very limited space to mobilize Sudanese, and create a strong alliance to bring rights and lasting peace.
Whether the south continues after the transitional period within the existing of the political and geographical Sudanese map or opt for separation, the struggle should still continue in the north. The main enemy here is the dictator regime it still exists, people have to focus on how to use the next interim period to help other agendas come forward.
