Quote: ICC prosecutor urges UNSC not to protect Al-Bashir if judges order his arrest Politics 12/3/2008 7:53:00 PM UNITED NATIONS, Dec 3 (KUNA) -- Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), on Wednesday urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) not to protect Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir if the judges request his arrest "shortly" on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur. "The council must be prepared. If the judges decide to issue an arrest warrant against President Al-Bashir, there will be a need for united and consistent action to ensure its execution. President Al-Bashir will insist to deny his crimes and ... will insist to get your protection," Moreno-Ocampo told the council in an open meeting. He indicated that the judges will rule "shortly" on the case. "It is time to be prepared for their ruling". He said Al-Bashir is trying to convince organisations and "this council that you have to protect him. The international community cannot be part of such a cover up. Faced with genocide and crimes against humanity, we know that inaction and 'business as usual' are part of the crimes". The international community cannot conceal his crimes, he said, and "cannot be part of any cover up of genocide or crimes against humanity". He reminded the council that the court had issued arrest warrants against a Janjaweed leader Ali Kushayb and Ahmed Harun whi is defiantly serving as the Minister of humanitarian Affairs in Al-Bashir Government in charge of the people he himself displaced in Darfur. "Individuals involved in the crims will have to come to The Hague and appear before the judges. No one is above the law," he insisted. He warned that genocide continues in Darfur, rapes in around the camps continue, humanitarian assistance is still hindered and more than 5,000 displaced persons die each month. At least 300,000 people have been killed and 2.7 million others displaced from their homes because of fighting across Darfur since 2003 between rebels, Government forces and allied militiamen known as the Janjaweed, who are accused of widespread human rights abuses in their attacks against civilians. The UN-AU hybrid mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has been in place since the start of this year to try to quell the violence and the humanitarian suffering but has failed in its mission because of lack of troops and equipment.
