Rahm Emanuel brings tough tactics, saucy tongue to Obama White House

Rahm Emanuel, whose sharp elbows and salty tongue have earned him the nickname "Rahm-bo," could have been a professional ballet dancer but instead became the inspiration for the Josh Lyman character on "The West Wing."
"He is the perfect choice," said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) of President-elect Barack Obama's decision to tap Emanuel as his chief of staff. "He knows [Capitol] Hill, he knows substance, he knows politics and, most importantly, he can get the job done."

Democratic strategist Paul Begala once described Emanuel's aggressive style as a "cross between a hemorrhoid and a toothache."
Emanuel, 48, a Chicago native, earned his stripes as a hard-charging White House aide in Bill Clinton's administration.
Though Emanuel has supposedly mellowed in recent years, he's best known for his passion, intensity and expletive-laden vocabulary.

In one infamous episode, he gave British Prime Minister Tony Blair some blunt advice before Blair appeared with Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal erupted.
"This is important. Don't f--- it up," he reportedly told Blair. Intensity apparently runs in the family. Emanuel's brother, Ari, a talent agent in Los Angeles, is the model for the in-your-face Ari Gold character on HBO's "Entourage."

Elected to Congress in 2002, Emanuel quickly became a power on Capitol Hill, serving as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for the 2006 elections. After Democrats gained 30 seats, Emanuel, a legendary fund-raiser, became the party's golden boy.
Emanuel's father, Benjamin, is an Israeli-born doctor. His mom, Martha, was a civil rights activist in the 1960s and worked as a psychiatric social worker.
Emanuel described family dinners as political free-for-alls.
"You had to get ready for dinner conversations at our house," he told Washingtonian.com. "You didn't just come down to dinner and say, 'How was your day?' You either came ready or you got shut out."
Emanuel's mom encouraged him to take ballet lessons. He won a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School but turned it down to attend Sarah Lawrence College. He also has a master's in speech and communication from Northwestern University.
He is credited with pushing Clinton to devote time to fund-raising during his 1992 campaign, which helped keep the effort afloat during a tough stretch.
As a senior White House adviser from 1993 to 1998, he tangled with First Lady Hillary Clinton at times, and his abrasive style made enemies.
According to Washington lore, he once mailed a rotting fish to a former co-worker after the two parted ways, and following the 1996 election, he rattled off Clinton's betrayers at a celebratory dinner, plunging a steak knife into the table and shouting "Dead" after every name.
Emanuel and his wife, Amy, have three children, Zach, Ilana and Leah. Emanuel hesitated before accepting Obama's job offer out of concern over not spending enough time with them.
He admits he's driven partly by a fear of failure.
"I always tell the staff failure is not an option," he said in a recent interview. "You never give in, and you never give up."
