The National Committee for the Protection and Defence of
Individuals/ Groups Affected by 10 May Events

We, the undersigned below, organisations and individual lawyers/legal experts, opinion makers, human rights defenders, civil society organisations and political groups, have decided to form a National Committee to Protect and Defend Individuals/ Groups affected by 10 May events in response to the urgent need to protect innocent civilians who were affected by the violence and its aftermath which was took place in Omdurman and the national capital.
Thus, we announce the formation of this Committee, which is led by the principles of respect of human dignity, rule of law, stability, peace and justice without discrimination. This is especially critical after 10 May and its repercussion, which has led to killings of innocent persons and created fear amongst citizens and grave human rights violations. These violations include ethnic and political based targeting focused on citizens from Darfur who are residents of the national capital. The violation also has increased social polarization and national disintegration.
In this statement, we denounce the violence that has been inflicted on citizens (whether in the capital or in other areas of conflict), which includes violations of national and international law. We are aware of the government’s responsibility to maintain security, but we also ask the government to implement its responsibilities to bring peace to Darfur. This includes providing protection for civilians, safe return for displaced persons, compensation, and bringing to justice those who committed crimes.
We, who form the National Committee to Protect and Defend Individuals/Groups affected by 10 May events, have learned of serious crimes have and being committed through our everyday experience and numerous information we received of human rights violations through the media, the campaign launched to search individuals and groups, arrests, disappearances, extra-judicial executions, torture, ethnic targeting which we view as grave violation of the interim constitution and rule of law and justice mechanisms. This includes violations of international humanitarian and human right law, which Sudan has to abide by.
We call upon the Sudanese law enforcement agencies to implement the recognized standards to protect human rights. We announce the formation of the National Committee to Protect and Defend Individuals/Groups affected by 10 May and the start of it’s work to provide legal protection to those who are detained and those who will face trials and advocate and provide support for victims and those affected by May 10 events, which includes also to work to reduce ethnic discrimination and to patch the social and national fabric. We call on all individuals, civil society organisations, all political parties and groups, national institutions to uphold the principles outlined by the National Committee to Protect and Defend Individuals/Groups affected by 10 May events.
