PRESS RELEASE
In its continued abuse and violation of civil rights and disregard for the Interim National Constitution of the Sudan, the regime's security organ – the National Intelligence and Security Service has unjustifiable and without reason stormed the residence of Sayid Mubarak El-Mahdi, Chairman of the Sudanese Umma Party (Reform and Renewal).
The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday 14th July when an armed group of twelve (12) men stormed his residence, brutally assaulted members of his household and arrested Sayid Mubarak El-Mahdi. Claiming to be under orders from the Director General of the National Security Forces, Mr. Salah Gosh, the armed group of men escorted Mubarak into their vehicles and hastily sped away.
At the same time a second group of armed men also arrested Sayid Abdel-Jalil Al-Basha – Secretary General of the Party.
This incident represents yet another manifestation of the regime's brutal tactics of intimidation and coercion intended to silence all those who stand for the rule of law and the principles of freedom of speech and human rights upheld by the interim constitution of 2005.
The Umma Party demands the immediate release of Sayid Mubarak El-Mahdi and Sayid Abdel-Jalil Al-Basha and holds the government authorities fully responsible for any physical harm that might fall upon them. Furthermore the Party calls on national civil society, political parties and the regional/international community to condemn these actions and to play their role in safeguarding and upholding the constitution and the rule of law.
Sayid Mubarak El-Mahdi has been actively calling for improved governance and greater accountability by the ruling Government of National Unity. He has been critical of the government's policies and continues to advocate for a peaceful transformation towards greater democracy.
