Loual Deng, is already a star in the US.

Chris Duhon, left, and Luol Deng celebrate Duke's 66-63 win over Xavier

    Devils Find What Works
Duke Fights Off Xavier to Reach Final Four for the 14th Time: Duke 66, Xavier 63
    By Camille Powell
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Monday, March 29, 2004; Page D01

ATLANTA, March 28 -- Luol Deng leapt in the arms of one of his Duke teammates in the minutes following the Blue Devils' 66-63 victory over Xavier in the Atlanta Region final in front of 24,711 at the Georgia Dome.

The 18-year-old freshman had on a new white hat and a new white T-shirt celebrating Duke's 14th trip to the Final Four, and a broad smile across his face -- the face of Duke's latest tournament hero.

Deng scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in a dominating second-half performance for the Blue Devils (31-5), who will play Connecticut, the Phoenix Region champion, in San Antonio on Saturday. Deng, who also had seven rebounds and three assists, was named the region's most outstanding player, becoming the first Duke freshman to earn the honor.

"I just found out about it, but it is an unbelievable feeling," Deng said. "I just played as hard as I could, but I give all the credit to my teammates, because they played great and we win as a team."

Inside the Duke locker room, "one of the great things that happened in this game happened at halftime," Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said. Deng became very emotional as he spoke to his older teammates, urging them to "play outside ourselves."

"For a kid -- a freshman -- to do that, it had a tremendous impact on our team," Krzyzewski said. "In my time as a coach, whenever I've seen a kid do that, whether it be Dawkins or Hill or Hurley or Laettner or Langdon or Battier, they usually end up doing something really exceptional in that half or in that game. I think that's what happened . . . We needed that type of response in order to beat this team today. We needed something extraordinary."

Early in the second half, Deng led the Blue Devils on a 9-3 run that turned a five-point deficit into a 39-38 lead. In that stretch, he hit a jumper just inside the foul line, made a three-pointer from the left side and scored on a flying dunk off of a nice pass from Duhon.

Xavier responded by scoring four straight points to regain the lead, 42-39.

Then the 6-8 Deng showed his versatility by grabbing a defensive rebound and dribbling the length of the floor, weaving through defenders and finishing with a finger roll.

With about five minutes left in the game, Deng took an inbounds pass and found himself wide open on the right side; he set his feet and sank a three-pointer to tie the score at 56. Three minutes later, he battled for an offensive rebound and passed it out to Redick, who made a three-pointer to give Duke a 59-56 lead. Deng then made a brilliant tap-in off of a Duhon miss to give the Blue Devils a 61-56 advantage with 1:52 to play.

"He made some big plays for us, but he has played well all year long and throughout the tournament," said Duhon, who has been playing despite bruised ribs since the ACC championship game. "The tip-in basket that he had was one of the greatest plays that we have had all year, and he did a great job."

Duke heeds Deng's plea, rallies by Xavier, 66-63, to reach its 14th Final 4; Freshman rises with 19 points; His emotional speech at halftime, clutch play help top seed prevail

ATLANTA - Daniel Ewing made the declaration, but it was unnecessary.

Anyone who watched Duke freshman Luol Deng in the final minutes of the Blue Devils' 66-63 victory over Xavier yesterday could have said it for him.

"Luol's not a freshman anymore," Ewing said.

Deng, less than three weeks shy of his 19th birthday, let his emotions fly in the locker room at intermission and carried that spirit into the second half in front of 24,711 at the Georgia Dome.

He was named the Atlanta Regional's Most Outstanding Player after scoring 19 points and collecting seven rebounds to give the top-seeded Blue Devils a Final Four date with Connecticut on Saturday night in San Antonio.

Duke (31-5), which won its third NCAA championship in 2001, will make its 14th Final Four appearance and 10th under coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils could face fellow Atlantic Coast Conference representative Georgia Tech in the championship.

"One of the great things that happened in this game happened at halftime," Krzyzewski said. "Luol got very emotional. He was crying. He expressed his feelings to the team - that we needed to play outside of ourselves.

"For a kid, a freshman, to do that, for any kid to do that, I think it had a tremendous impact on our team. In my time as a coach, whenever I've seen a kid do that ... they usually end up doing something exceptional."

Krzyzewski has seen other players - Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Shane Battier, to name a few - rally his teams that way.

"His leadership qualities came out," Krzyzewski said of Deng, a native of Sudan. "As a result, he made those plays."

With Duke trailing 56-53, Deng launched a three-pointer from the right wing and tied the game with 5:11 left. About two minutes later, he rebounded a missed layup by Chris Duhon and sent the ball sharply to J.J. Redick, waiting at the top of the key. Redick hit a three-pointer, putting Duke ahead for good.

"We needed something extraordinary from our kids, and Luey gave us that," Krzyzewski said.

His Blue Devils needed some inspiration after Dedrick Finn buried a three-pointer as time ran out in the first half to put Xavier ahead 30-28.

But Xavier (26-11), an upstart seventh seed, never could put away the game, in part because of Duhon's defense. Duhon effectively guarded Xavier's Romain Sato in the first half and Lionel Chalmers in the second. Chalmers scored 17 points but shot 6-for-16, and Sato had just 10 points.

"Whatever player was hot, I put [Duhon] on, and he became not hot," Krzyzewski said. "The kid's a winner, and I was glad to be able to ride his bus."

Playing with sore ribs, Duhon scored just six points but didn't mind a bit.

"This is probably my favorite team since I've been at Duke," said Duhon, who was part of the 2001 national championship team as a freshman. "It's an amazing feeling to go out and battle with these guys. I hope they enjoy it as much as I have."

Xavier, which won the Atlantic 10 tournament, ending Saint Joseph's perfect season with a 20-point victory, had already cut down the second- and third-seeded teams in the region. But it couldn't make it 1-2-3 (last done by LSU in 1986).

Not that it didn't threaten the more experienced Blue Devils. Over the course of 40 minutes, there were 12 lead changes and 11 ties, the margin between the teams never higher than six points.

The Musketeers were up by three with 12:33 left when they began to collapse. Anthony Myles picked up his fourth foul, and Xavier coach Thad Matta hesitated before sending reserve Brandon Cole to the scorer's table to sub for Myles.

Six seconds later, with Cole waiting to enter the game, Myles fouled out, leaving with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Xavier could not compensate for the absence of the 6-foot-9 forward.

"We should have gotten him out of there sooner," Matta said.

Only reserve Shavlik Randolph fouled out for Duke, and the Blue Devils didn't blink.

After all, they still had Deng, a lanky 6-8 forward who can play almost any position. He played the final minutes with four fouls along with Redick and Shelden Williams. Redick and Ewing each scored 13, and Williams had 12 with 13 rebounds.

Ewing said Deng "has stepped up for us numerous times this season, and tonight was one of those times."

Deng had just one basket and four points at the half, before his fiery words gave the team a jolt.

"I wasn't happy with the way I was playing, and I felt like I was letting everybody down," Deng said. "At times I just get so emotional. It was time to let it out."

Quote: Deng had 19 points and was named the MVP of the regional
    .

Quote: Freshman Deng turns into Duke's impact player

ATLANTA -- Duke had just watched the tape of its 2001 Elite Eight victory over USC, so it was fresh in Chris Duhon's mind when he summoned Luol Deng for a discussion at halftime of Sunday's game against Xavier.

Duhon was concerned about the freshman, who he could tell was nervous and playing tentatively, having shot just 1-of-6 as the Blue Devils fell behind 30-28 at the break. Duhon knew the Blue Devils weren't going to beat the Musketeers without a better performance from Deng, just as they needed every one of the then-freshman Duhon's 13 points that day against the Trojans.

"That [my performance against USC] was just what I was doing all year, and he [Deng] is way better than me," said Duhon. "I told him to relax, be himself."

Needless to say, the pep talk worked. The Blue Devils wound up beating Xavier 66-63, thanks in large part to Deng's second-half performance: 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, five rebounds and two assists. Most notable was a stretch of three plays in which he helped swing the game from 56-53 Xavier to 61-56 Duke, hitting the game-tying 3-pointer, outreaching Xavier's Justin Doellman for an offensive rebound and kicking it to J.J. Redick for the go-ahead trey, than soaring to the basket to follow up a Duhon missed lay-up.

That tip-in, which coach Mike Krzyzewski described as "Battier-like" and Duhon called "one of the greatest plays we've had all year," finally broke the resilient Musketeers' backs.

"We needed something extraordinary from our guys [after halftime]," said Krzyzewski. "Luol gave us that. Just that one spurt was the difference in the game."

"He was a man tonight," exclaimed Redick.

Never was that more apparent than at halftime, when a tearful Deng stood up before his teammates and urged them to "play outside of ourselves" in the second half. "In my time as coach, whenever I've seen a kid do that, whether it be Johnny Dawkins, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley or Christian Laettner, they usually end up doing something really exceptional in that half," said Krzyzewski. "For a freshman to do that had an impact on our team."

That he's a freshman is perhaps the only thing keeping Deng from being his team's leader full-time. Clearly, he's the best talent on Duke's roster, perhaps the only player one can be certain will have a place at the next level, but for the most part he takes a backseat in the locker room to the more experienced Duhon or the more brash Redick.

If the Blue Devils plan to cut down the nets in San Antonio, however, they'll need Deng to reprise his starring role. He is the closest thing Duke has to a Carmelo Anthony or Juan Dixon, the go-to guy who puts his team on his shoulders and carries them to the title.

It's ironic, then, that Duke's road to the trophy starts with Connecticut, for whom his brother Ajou was a redshirt freshman when the Huskies beat the Blue Devils for the 1999 national title.

"I was watching the game [in England] and that's really where it all started," Deng said of his journey to America to play high school and now college basketball. "I wanted to be in that situation."

Deng may be the one advantage Duke has against his brother's former team. Big man Shelden Williams isn't likely to outplay Connecticut All-American Emeka Okafor. Whether or not top defender Duhon draws star Huskies shooter Ben Gordon, Connecticut can come right back with Rashad Anderson and Denham Brown.

But Deng, as opponents have found out all season, presents a different sort of matchup problem. Is he a wing player? A power forward?

"He is a very unique player," said Krzyzewski
    .

Thanks Deng for sharing that great info about the great start. Despite the fact that I'm supporting U conn on the final four, I think loual has proven he is a great and great factor that allowed Duke to win its last game on the NCAA before going to SA. The final four is next week, and I will see how it goes and I wish goodluck to laoul. It is too bad that Duke is going to face Ucon in the final four, because I like U conn where I think they would win it all. Dear Deng, last week I read the ESPN magazine and there was an interview with Laoul. The guy has been through many bad and painful events but his amture level amaze everyone in Duke University. Many people believe that laoul could make it to the NBA because of his skills not to mention hid size

Re: Loual Deng, is already a star in the US. (Re: Deng)

    Connecticut at Duke

    Men's Basketball · Preview

Time: 8:47 p.m. EST Venue: Alamodome

GAME: Connecticut (31-6) vs. Duke (31-5).

    ROUND: National Semifinals.

    TIME: Saturday, 8:47 p.m. EST.

    SITE: The Alamodome, San Antonio.

Nothing short of a Final Four was expected for this Connecticut team. A Final Four is expected every year at Duke.

With both teams right where they were supposed to be, the Huskies and Blue Devils meet in a rematch of the 1999 national championship game, with the winner earning the right to play for another title.

Connecticut won its lone national title with a 77-74 victory in that game, and Saturday's semifinal could be just as good as that contest was.

The Huskies and Blue Devils were Nos. 1 and 2 in the preseason, and they have been the two best teams in the postseason. UConn won its four games in the Phoenix Regional by an average of 17.5 points, while Duke had an average winning margin of 19.0 points despite beating Xavier by only three in the Atlanta Regional final.

Unlike the 1999 game, when a Duke team featuring future NBA players Elton Brand, Shane Battier and Corey Maggette was heavily favored, UConn enters this contest as a slight favorite.

"Connecticut is playing like the best team in the country right now. They blew everybody out in their region," Duke guard J.J. Redick said. "None of those games were even close. They just jumped on teams right away. That's an impressive thing - the way they score. They get up and down. They have so many different options on offense and they're pretty deep. They bring some good guys off the bench, too."

The Huskies played inconsistently for much of the season, but hit their stride starting with the Big East tournament. Showing an ability to score from inside or outside while continuing to lead the nation in field-goal percentage defense, UConn has finally looked like the powerful team many expected it to be.

"It would have been incredibly disappointing if we didn't get to a Final Four with this group," UConn coach Jim Calhoun said. "This is as good a group of kids as I've ever been around. They're incredibly talented. I don't know if it's the best team I've ever had, but I can tell you this much, they're incredible people to be around."

The biggest reason for the strong play has been the performance of Ben Gordon. The junior guard was having a somewhat disappointing season until raising his level of play once fellow star Emeka Okafor had to miss a pair of games in the Big East tournament because of a back injury.

Gordon scored a tournament-record 81 points in New York to lead the Huskies to the conference championship and hasn't slowed down since. He is averaging 22 points in the NCAA tournament and scored 36 in UConn's 87-71 victory over Alabama in the regional final.

"I haven't really done anything different," Gordon said. "I think the last few weeks I had to step up a lot. I've been successful and we've been successful as a team."

Okafor was hurt again in the regional final, taking a hard hit to the neck-shoulder area that caused numbness in his arm. The nation's leading shot blocker and second-leading rebounder was hurt again toward the end of practice Wednesday, but is expected to be ready to play.

Duke's leader has also had to overcome a late-season injury. Chris Duhon hurt his ribs in the ACC championship game, but has played through the pain to lead the Blue Devils to their 14th Final Four.

While his offense has suffered, Duhon has continued to play superb defense. He helped limit Illinois' Deron Williams to 3-of-13 shooting in the round of 16, then took turns covering both members of Xavier's high-scoring duo of Lionel Chalmers and Romain Sato on Sunday. Chalmers shot 6-of-16 and Sato was 2-of-10.

If coach Mike Krzyzewski puts Duhon on the opponent's hottest guard again, then Duhon would match up with Gordon on Saturday night.

While a healthy Okafor would give the inside advantage to UConn, perimeter play is a strength for both teams. Rashad Anderson has been nearly as hot as Gordon, hitting 16 of 31 3-pointers in the tournament and averaging 18 points. He was 6-of-6 in the first half against Alabama and finished with a career-high 28 points.

The Blue Devils counter with their three-guard lineup of Redick, Duhon and Daniel Ewing, and are shooting 48.9 percent from the field in the tournament. They also have an outstanding slasher in Luol Deng, who averaged 18.5 points in the last two games and earned regional MVP honors.

If Deng is too quick for Josh Moore, he could end up being covered by UConn reserve Charlie Villanueva, his former teammate at Blair Academy in New Jersey.

Duke is two wins away from a fourth national title under Krzyzewski. Though the Blue Devils have reached 10 Final Fours since 1986, this is their longest tournament run since winning their last title in 2001.

"I believe if I played here four years under Coach K and we didn't make it to the Final Four, I'd be disappointed," Redick said. "I don't know if it would be unfulfilled because you can measure success and all that other stuff in other ways, but it would definitely be a disappointment."

Duke leads the series 4-3, but UConn has won the last three meetings. The Blue Devils eliminated the Huskies from the 1964, 1990 and 1991 NCAA tournaments.
