KHARTOUM (AFP) - Tribes from western Sudan and the neighbouring Central African Republic have signed a peace charter in a bid to end cross-border clashes, the Sudanese police press office said.
The signing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials -- including Sudan's Interior Minister Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein -- and followed a three-day tribal reconciliation conference in the town of Um Dafooq in South Darfur State, the statement said.
It added that the Central African Kara, Bolo and Fela tribes agreed with the neighbouring Sudanese Taaishah, Fallatah and Beni Helbah tribes "not to engage in clashes and pursue peace coexistence".
A joint committee of tribal leaders was set up to follow up the implementation of the charter.
