A ROAD-MAP FOR SUDAN FROM A CASUAL OBSERVER

To the best of my knowledge all the huge efforts exerted to solve the on-going crisis of Darfur did not scratch below the surface to diagnose the seemingly unrelated causes of this dilemma to the events which occurred during the Mahdist era in Sudan, to establish if there were likely links between the two. Because during the short-lived Mahdist rule the tribes of western Sudan formed the driving-force and the ruling-class of that regime ,and imposed a harsh, intolerant, savage, inhumane and improvisatory ruling system which gave them free hand to do whatever they thought appropriate ,irrespective of its consistency with Islam {which was their assumed ideology???} rational justice or common sense .needless to say those absolute rulers committed horrendous atrocities against their fellow country men/women in central, north and eastern Sudan. This perhaps explains the lack of concern of the masses of the above mentioned regions and their unsympathetic feelings towards the crimes still being committed in that part of Sudan, precisely, in Darfur and kordofan? Interestingly and as a logical deduction 60% of the invading colonial army which dealt a humiliating defeat to the mahdist army in 2 hours ,were Sudanese fighters embittered by the anti-people policies of the dervishes , rule ?????. A lesson the out-of-touch rulers of today had better digest. Because the mounting global recognition of the opposition coupled with the regime’s isolation could make history repeat it self. Another indicative factor of the presence of external influence in Sudan’s internal politics was the out-right victory of a pro-Egyptian political party {the democratic unionist party} in the first post –independence elections?????? Therefore the cornered regime should not bet on time or lazily resign to considering the national crisis insoluble and as difficult and time-consuming as looking for a needle in a hay stack, or waste time waiting for solutions from the AFRICAN UNION, UN or the equally impotent ARAB-LEAGUE all of whom have no admirable success stories to copy from? Therefore , the regime should {for its own good} abandon its conscious policy of confusing the mediators , regional and international envoys, and consider adequately addressing the under-lying deep root-causes of the conflict instead of further complicating them or shying away from the numerous handy solutions initiated by others . Basically it can, in fact, with little honesty and good intentions end the conflict and stop the out break of new ones? Moreover the regime should stop capitalizing on the powerlessness of its helpless citizens who failed to oppose it, naively assuming that this situation would last forever, as resorting to military action is seriously being talked about now. It should also stop chanting unrealistic, inapplicable and bogus slogans which failed to fly in its places of origin, but rather develop some degree of patriotism and contemplate self-reform and fully realize that the continuation of its regime in its present form is totally impossible. Hence the regime’s first agendum should be the immediate invalidation of the simplistic characterization of the crisis as being between Arabs and non-Arabs which is utter rubbish and misleading, because almost 100% of all the Sudanese tribes are ethnically Africans {with the exception of the RASHAIDA tribes} and then quote the traditional Sudanese wisdom and tribal reconciliation mechanisms to rebuild the solid tribal structures it damaged ,so as to use their accumulative experiences as tried and effective mechanisms to heal the wounds inflicted on the victims ,and then agree collectively on how the country should be governed without dictating solutions that do not have the consent of ALL the people of Sudan. Finally…..those in power today stand only for 5% of the population of the country, so they should shelf or put to rest their unpopular initiatives of internal dialogue {or monologue, so to speak} and hearken attentively to their fate being debated on in the near neighborhood and join the debate before it is too late ?
