A MESSAGE TO THE UNIVERSITY GRADUATES: “SUDAN IS NOT

The speech of H.E. Dr. Peter Nyok was a collection of practical and sound advices to all the university graduates. In fact, he has ‘hit the nail on the head’ when he advised the students to start planning to execute private projects rather than to depend on government positions and that “SUDAN IS NOT KHARTOUM ONLY!!”; in other words, university graduates should not stay only in Khartoum but should move out to the other parts of SUDAN. Personally, I had a similar advice from one of my British Zoology lecturers in the University of Khartoum, Dr. John Lewis, who wrote in my autograph on March 27, 1965 (just a year before my graduation in 1966) the following words: “If, as biologist, you end up behind a large desk in an office in Khartoum with a large salary and drink large lemons – don’t think you are a success; you will have been a failure. Far better, if you sweat in the sun somewhere south of Medani and do something practical to help the Sudan. My very best wishes.” With this advice in mind, I had been the only graduate out of other eight to be appointed by the then Game and Fisheries Department simply because I had accepted to work outside Khartoum. After five months from being appointed, I had been asked by the Fisheries Administration to conduct the first fisheries survey of Lake Nubia (part of Lake Nasser) during the period 1967-1968 after the beautiful town of Wadi Halfa had been inundated by the Nile waters as result of the construction of the Aswan High Dam (‘Al Sad Al Alii’) at Aswan. At that time, the environment was extremely harsh as nothing existed except rocky mountains and hills, barren sand, poisonous snakes, scorpions, hyenas, crocodiles, the most scorching sun heat, accommodation in tents but most encouraging, a tremendous fish potential and the most friendly and hospital people who had resisted being moved by the then President Aboud’s Government to Khasm El Girba (“New Halfa”). Honestly speaking, that year had been for myself the most educational practical school for fisheries and life! Through field work, a university graduate can achieve a lot and above all, become a knowledgeable experienced scientist!! Therefore, I encourage all university graduates not to stay idle in Khartoum but move out and “do something practical to help the Sudan”!

The speech of the Guest of Honor, Mr. Anis Haggar, was mainly on “Responsibility” in the Corporate and Social sense as nowadays Companies are being judged and measured by their Corporate Social Responsibility programmes, not just their balance sheets”. He continued to stress the point that “in each of the great religions of the world, the faithful are required to put aside a small percentage of their wealth, for the benefit of their neighbors, their fellow citizens and those in need. Besides, wherever you go, whatever you do, please keep in mind that life is not just another qualification, a job, money and marriage; each one of you, each one of us, has a fundamental responsibility to our fellow human beings and our environment.” Very optimistically, Mr. Haggar further mentioned “looking at this splendid gathering, I wonder if a future female President is sitting here, amongst us. Why not؟”
At the very beginning of his speech, Mr. Haggar said “my thoughts turn to the great English Poet, Rudyard Kipling, whose well known poem “IF” has been a guiding light throughout my life’s journey.” Personally, I keep the poem “IF” since I had been in 2nd secondary year, Comboni College. To this very moment, I recite this poem whenever I am down in order to boost my morale. In fact, “IF” is a booster of the soul. I was not surprised when Mr. Anis Haggar told me during dinner that his late father gave him this poem and asked him to learn it by heart!! However, as many readers do not know who is Kipling, a brief background of this distinguished writer and his poem “IF” are mentioned hereinafter:
“Joseph Rudyard Kipling is a British author, novelist, poet and journalist who was born on 30 December, 1865 in Bombay (now ‘Mumbai’), India. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is regarded as a major “innovator in the art of short story”. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. He died of perforated duodenal ulcer on 18 January 1936 at the age of 70. His body was not buried but cremated and his ashes were buried in Poets’ Corner, part of the South Transept of Westminster Abbey, where many distinguished literary people are buried or commemorated”.









































I strongly recommend that the student editors of “El nisf Al waid” journal, Ahfad University for Women, publish Kipling’s poem “IF” now and then so that many students read it.
May I take this opportunity to wish the Governing Board, the Council, Professor Gasim, the Academic and other staff members and the students of Ahfad University for Women continued success and prosperity.
