Protesting student in Port Sudan imprisoned

    PORT SUDAN

    (

    2 May

    .) -

The Criminal Court of Port Sudan on Wednesday ordered the imprisonment of one of the students accused of participating in a Beja Congress protest, demanding the release of politicians who were detained in September 2013.

The judge of the court sentenced one of the defendants, named Tahir Mahmood Gulwbai, to imprisonment for an unknown period, owing to his absence from a previous court session over a case submitted by the security apparatus.

Eight students from the Beja Congress had protested in front of the buildings of the security apparatus in Port Sudan, demanding the release of a group of political detainees.

However, the force of the security apparatus arrested them and transferred them to the police. A case was filed against them, related to demonstration and causing chaos. The court has held several hearings in the case.

    Beja Congress

The Eastern Front, including the Beja Congress, signed the Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement (ESPA) with the government of Sudan in October 2006. This agreement reflected the structure of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the Darfur Peace Agreement, featuring power sharing, disarmament, and reintegration of the movements. Chairman of the Beja Congress, Musa Mohamed Ahmed, was awarded with the post assistant to President Omar Al Bashir.
