WASHINGTON CELEBRATES THE BIRTH OF A NEW NATION
The Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Sudan
Celebrated July 9, 2011 in Washington, DC
Washington – Diplomats, US Government officials, non-governmental organizations, investors, Sudanese Diaspora and friends of Sudan will gather on July 9, 2011 in Washington, DC to celebrate the birth of the Republic of South Sudan.
July 9, 2011 marks the end of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which ended 22 years of war between North and South Sudan and provided for the democratic transformation of the State. After a six-year interim period, the CPA called for the right of self determination for the people of Southern Sudan and Abyei through separate referenda, as wells as a process of popular consultation for the people of Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
Although many of the elements of the CPA were not fully implemented, on January 9, 2011, four million Southern Sudanese registered to vote in the Southern Sudan Referendum; 97.5% turned out to vote; and 98.83% voted for separation. July 9, 2011 marks the beginning of a new African country founded on principles of freedom, justice and equality.
Heads of State from around the world will join Republic of South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon in Juba, South Sudan on July 9th to celebrate and to commemorate the sacrifice and struggle of millions of Southern Sudanese and to acknowledge and appreciate the support of the international community, which combined, resulted in the achievement of this historic and momentous occasion.
In addition to the official ceremony and celebration in Juba, celebrations are planned in locations throughout the United States and around the world. The public and press are invited to attend the following celebratory events in the Washington, DC area:

The United Nations will meet on July 13, 2011 to formally discuss membership and recognition of the Republic of South Sudan; and on July 14, 2011, the UNGA will vote on a resolution to accept South Sudan as the world’s 193rd UN Member State.

The Government of Southern Sudan Mission to the United States and the United Nations derives its mandate from Article 46 of the Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan, which states that “The Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) shall establish, develop and maintain good relations and cooperation with foreign governments, foreign non-governmental organizations and associations for mutual advantage in trade, investment, culture, sports, education, credit, loans, grants, technical assistance and other fields of development Cooperation.” On July 9, 2011, the Mission will transition to become the Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan.
